Help us at Playful Mindset to create our Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy? We are a brand new charitable organization committed to disrupting adverse childhood experiences. We are equally committed to changing the lives of individual children and caregivers, AND changing systems that oppress. Organizations that so often start with a mission to "do good" end up doing harm, in explicit and implicit ways. I wholeheartedly believe in a changing world, that change is possible, and that organizations don't have to be what we are told they should be. That leaders have a responsibility to challenge, disrupt, dare to be different. I'm learning that this involves moving slowly, intentionally, making sure there's dialogue and reflection at every turn. Hustle only feeds toxicity, (well...and capitalism, and...so much more). We're in the beginning stages of creating a new policy. We have hopes to build in practices that reflect how we bring this very important policy to life in the day to day at a governance, operational, programmatic, and partnership level. We also hope to more fully explore how outdoor play itself integrates with principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. I talk a fair amount about strategy...in the coming days I'll unpack more of what this oft-used word is all about and how you can use it to cut through the noise, fulfil on your goals and dreams, overcome challenges and conserve your energy; whilst maintaining your FOCUS on what matters most, in business and in life.

Cool ideas about communities here. I especially like the model of "Start with Who" (vs. Start with Why). This is strongly aligned with how I use LXD in my course/community design. Start with empathy. Who are your learners and what do they want/need? Who are you and what do you want/need?

Humans are hard-wired to seek community/belonging, creativity/imagination and meaning/purpose. These are what lead to a happy life. Unfortunately, these very same drives can be used for negative ends. By seeking to be in a group we may naturally try to exclude those different from ourselves to create an “out group”. Imagination can be used to spark irrational fear of the unknown or we fall for propaganda. And so many people today are left with a sense of hopelessness in a life with little purpose. So what can we do about this? How can we foster a sense of community and belonging, especially for those who feel left out? How can we grow the imagination and creativity? And how can we help others find purpose? In short, how can we help everyone to live a good life? I’m incredibly privileged that I have gotten to live in several cultures and connect with people very different from myself. I connect the legal world with computer programs that I create and I’m still full of awe that it works. I feel hopeful each day with a sense of purpose. Now how can we help others? Can I perhaps help you in my small way? Thank you to Jamie Pennington who talked with me today about this topic. It was my first time meeting him and it was nice to connect with another person who is concerned about the welfare of others. Be good to each other. WHAT WOULD I DO IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS? If I had a million dollars, I would invest it into fulfilling the dreams God has placed in my heart. Here is what I would do: 1. Build an orphanage home for children: One of my biggest dreams is to provide a loving home for abandoned children. It would be a place where they are nurtured and given care. I want to be their mother and I would like my husband to be their father. 🥹❤️ 2. Build a physical office and academy for HEY SISSY: I want a place where girls and ladies can come to learn and grow. Our academy would offer practical training programs in personal development, leadership, entrepreneurship, and life skills. It would also be a safe space for mentorship and community helping every girl who walks through our doors see and maximise her true potential. 3. Offer scholarships to students: Because of my experiences growing up (praying for financial provision for my school fees almost every term), I would love to sponsor as many students as possible in school. And my criteria for scholarships will not only be merit-based. It would be especially for those who are financially incapable . 4. Carry out community service projects: I would organize outreach programs that meet real needs in society. From feeding the hungry to providing healthcare services, I would ensure that every project I carry out brings hope to people. With a million dollars, I want to leave a legacy that outlives me. I want my name to be relevant on earth even after I have gone to be with the Lord. So if I had that money, I would invest it in people because they are the greatest asset.

I was wrong. Earlier this year, I facetiously joked with friends and family: it’s easier to buy bigger clothes than go to the gym. Ha ha ha. 🙄 As the year progressed, that theme crashed head first into one of my other life’s philosophies: I’m cheap! Let’s go with frugal, shall we? While I may be frugal, I don’t like to buy cheap things. I live in Carhartt clothes. All year long. Shorts, socks, jackets (see pic), pants, vests, tshirts, hoodies, etc etc. And so buying new clothes started to hit me in a very tender and precious spot: my wallet! I thought I was getting a decent amount of exercise. My office is in the basement and the fridge/pantry are on the main floor. Up down. Up down. Up down. All day long! When I found myself googling “in home elevators”, I knew I had to make a change! Be more active!! So, when the kids went back to school, I committed to daily walks and a big 2 hour forest-walk every weekend with the dogs. Rain or shine. (so much rain today!) And 50 squats and 50 push-ups every day! So hard! And now to satisfy the LinkedIn purists…how does this apply to job-searching? It’s ok to admit you were wrong! Especially in regards to your resume. And your interviews skills. And your understanding of networking. It’s ok. It’s ok to ask for help. What worked in 2017…may not work now! It’s ok to course-correct! If it’s not working…make some changes! You can do it!! I’m cheering for you!! Fellowship and community will get us through this (rain) storm 💙
