🎥 Excited to share our recent upgrade to the Sony FX6 camera at Dartmouth Health. Swapping out our trusty Canon C200 and Canon C70 setups for this powerhouse has been a game-changer in our workflow.
The decision to go with the Sony FX6 was driven by its features - boasting a full-frame sensor and the ability to internally record 10-bit color, not to mention its capability to output a 16-bit linear RAW signal via SDI, though a feature we may not frequently utilize.
However, every rose has its thorn, and for us, the absence of a 3.5mm audio input jack was a notable drawback. Plus, all audio input is channeled through the proprietary top-handle, which offers two XLR inputs. Yet, harnessing the full potential of the four audio tracks still posed a challenge.
Enter the solution: leveraging Sony's dual wireless receiver (like our trusty URX-P03D) with the Sony SMAD-P3D hot shoe adapter. This setup ingeniously taps into all four audio channels, allowing seamless integration of external audio sources alongside the XLR inputs. Plus, the SMAD-P3D conveniently powers the receiver via the camera, so a few less batteries to carry around. If you're using the newer Sony URX-P40 receiver, you'll need the SMAD-P5 to accomplish the same result.
While this workaround isn't necessarily budget-friendly, it certainly maximizes the FX6's audio capabilities, mitigating the inconvenience of the absent 3.5mm jack. Yet, one can't help but ponder the potential for custom hardware solutions or third-party alternatives that optimize audio channel utilization or incorporate the coveted 3.5mm jack.
Sony FX6 has undoubtedly elevated our production game, though not without its quirks. Nonetheless, we're excited about the possibilities it unlocks and remain hopeful for future innovations to address its limitations. 🎬 #sonyfx6 #filmmaking #videoproduction
