Did you know that as a householder, you have a duty of care to take all reasonable measures to ensure that your waste is disposed of properly? If waste originating from your property is found to be fly tipped, we will expect you to be able to provide us with the details of who you passed your waste to. If you are unable to provide this information and are found to have failed in your duty of care, then you could be liable to a FPN of £400 or even criminal proceedings. Remember to carry out the following checks to prevent your waste from being disposed of incorrectly: ✅Keep a note of the name of the person/company and contact details ✅Ask to see the Waste Carriers Licence. You can also check the Environment Agency online public register to check if someone is a registered waste carrier. ✅Ask questions! Ask what will happen with your waste, where it will be taken. Legitimate waste carriers will be happy to answer questions. If someone refuses to answer, then don’t give them your business. ✅Note details of any vehicle used – vehicle registration number, any signage on the vehicle ✅Request a receipt ✅Do not use rogue callers to your property who offer to take waste without checking their details ✅Think about the fee. Remember, if a price quoted sounds too good to be true – it probably is!
