📌 A European Parliament Resolution calls on China to stop distorting international rules. The Resolution, initiated and spearheaded by the EPP Group MEP Miriam Lexmann, also calls on the EU and its Member States to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in relevant international organisations such as the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It also calls on the UN Secretariat to grant Taiwanese nationals and journalists the right of access to UN premises for visits, meetings, and news-gathering activities, which they are currently denied due to Chinese intervention. “Allowing the Chinese Communist Party to continue distorting UN Resolution 2758 and turning a blind eye to the increased military exercises around Taiwan threatens global peace and security. We must stand up for the truth, freedom and international law," Miriam Lexmann insists. By adopting the text, Members underline that Taiwan is the EU’s key partner and a like-minded democratic friend in the Indo-Pacific region. MEPs warn that any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, in particular through the use of force or coercion, will not be accepted and will be met with a firm and resolute response.

🌍 Consider the global context 🇪🇺 Understand the EU as it is 🧠 Think strategically 🗓️ Have a long-term approach 4⃣ pre-requisites for an intelligent discussion on governance, discussed in the latest TEPSA editorial by Cloos Jim 👉 why are they so important? 📄 https://lnkd.in/eFU64-S5 "The EU is to confront a host of major geopolitical, domestic, and even existential challenges, making imperative a fresh look at its governance. This means re-examining how the EU institutions interact with each other and with the Member States. This is not about treaty change, which is a different issue; it may be necessary in the longer term, but for the time being the emphasis should be on governance." #eugovernance #eudecisionmaking #EUinstitutions #EUdemocracy #eulegislation #governance #treatychange

The Role of International Norms Violation of International Norms: The normalization of relations has occurred alongside ongoing violations of international law by Israel, including the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and the annexation of East Jerusalem. The tacit approval and support from the U.S. and its allies have allowed Israel to continue these practices with little consequence, undermining the credibility of international norms regarding occupation and human rights. UN Resolutions and Veto Power: The U.S. has frequently used its veto power in the UN Security Council to shield Israel from resolutions that condemn its actions or call for accountability. This has contributed to a perception that the normalization process serves to legitimize Israel's actions rather than promote a fair resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

'The multilateral system, in short, is failing right at the time we need it to respond to a world in which major state conflict is back and nations are testing international rules and the institutions themselves', write Olivia N. and Justin Bassi.

My latest, in the Center for International Policy Journal, with Maximilian Hess, on how and why western institutions should engage Turkey to elicit more cooperation on Ukraine and restore the rule of law. We argue that while cooperation has been incredibly frustrating lately, it is crucially important that the west do what it can to foster good relations and promote democratic reform as we approach the possibility of a post-Erdoğan future.

Today, multilateral institutions are failing to protect free and fair trade, dignified labour, human rights, orderly migration, non-proliferation of indiscriminate weapons and other shared goals. But we must not give up and let the multilateral system, including the United Nations and the many organisations that sit under it, be taken over and weaponised by authoritarian powers like China and Russia and their own organizational shortcomings or incompetent and biased officials. https://lnkd.in/eiKbaqAZ

The Draghi report published today calls for accelerating the speed of EU work by increasing the use of QMV in the Council. Efficient decision-making is needed but QMV on the wrong issues risks undermining legitimacy. The debate needs to be nuanced. A 2015 QMV decision harmed EU legitimacy in Central Europe – as I analyzed in a piece for the JCMS journal - https://lnkd.in/er-77ADJ . But of course, the EU also needs to deliver otherwise it will lose its raison d’être.

If you really want to change something is recognizing Taiwan as an independent state. But the EU doesn't want that happen.
