What is DNS and Why Should I Care? We’ve all typed a web address into our browser and instantly landed on the right website. What makes that work? A clever system behind the scenes called DNS (Domain Name System) is responsible for making this happen. While some equate it to the internet's phonebook, I don’t think that’s quite right. Others describe it more like what Directory Assistance was back in the day and I feel like that is more accurate. You’d dial 4-1-1 on your landline phone and ask an operator to connect you to a certain person or business in a certain city. Here’s a high-level description of how DNS works: -You enter a user-friendly domain name (like "www.linkedin.com"). -DNS translates that name into an IP address (a series of numbers computers understand). -With the IP address, your computer can connect to the correct website server, and voila - you're there! Why should you care about DNS? -Faster Browsing: A well-configured DNS can lead to faster loading times. -Security: DNS plays a role in website security by directing you to the intended server. -Troubleshooting: Understanding DNS can help you troubleshoot basic connection issues. What questions do you have about DNS or do you have fun facts you've learned? Share them in the comments! #DNS #webdev #internet Photo by Greta Hoffman :

DNS (Domain Name System) works like an internet phonebook. Here's a simplified process: 1. User Request: You type a website name (like www.example.com) into your browser. 2. DNS Query: Your computer asks a DNS resolver (usually provided by your ISP) to find the IP address for that website. 3. Cache Check: The resolver checks if it already has the IP address stored (cached). If yes, it returns the IP address immediately. 4. Root Server: If not cached, the resolver asks a root DNS server where to find the IP address. 5. TLD Server: The root server directs the resolver to the top-level domain (TLD) server (for .com, .org, etc.). 6. Authoritative Server: The TLD server directs the resolver to the authoritative DNS server that has the exact IP address. 7. IP Address Returned: The authoritative server provides the IP address to the resolver. 8. Connecting: The resolver sends the IP address back to your computer, which then connects to the website. # Key Points - A Record : Links domain names to IPv4 addresses. - CNAME Record : Aliases one domain name to another. - MX Record : Directs emails to mail servers. - NS Record : Points to name servers for a domain. DNS makes it easy to use human-friendly names instead of IP addresses to access websites. #dns #domainnamesystem #Domain_Name_System
