Ilmatar has started the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for the Bothnia offshore wind project in Finland. Ilmatar aims to develop the Bothnia offshore wind farm in the Finnish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and to divide the project into two sub-areas, Bothnia and Bothnia West, covering close to 1,200 km2 with a potential capacity of 4 GW. The EIA process is being supported in cooperation with Ramboll Finland. Ilmatar added that the sites were optimised during the development process and have been reduced in size, with Bothnia West reduced by about 40%. “At this stage, we have chosen to proceed on areas with minimal overlap with other interests, such as shipping and fishing,” said Jori Sihvonen, Ilmatar’s offshore project manager for the EEZ. “We have also considered the depth conditions; the optimised project areas have a depth between 40 and 120 metres.” “This is the nature of the EIA process – you start big, and after thorough investigations, we end up with an optimised result since we have a better overview of a previously uncharted sea area and its surroundings,” added Anna Häger, Regional Manager at Ilmatar. “As an energy producer, we see this as an expected development. Future clean energy production needs to be built responsibly. Thanks to our strong environmental legislation, the Nordics is an optimal place to do this.” With the EIA process ongoing, the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) in Southwest Finland is now accepting statements and views from stakeholders, other authorities and the public, as part of the consultation process. Despite the optimisation, Bothnia remains one of Finland’s largest offshore wind projects. Together, the two areas cover nearly 1.200 km2 and have a potential energy production capacity of 4 GW. “Energy is the foundation of our modern society, as we have learnt the hard way in recent years,” continued Häger. “Ilmatar’s operations already have a positive climate impact, and the more renewable energy we produce, the faster other companies and industrial sectors can take steps towards greater sustainability. Electrification and the clean transition require a significant increase in renewable energy production.” #cleanenergy

This was an insightful discussion about the high impact of renewal energy and water infrastructure in today's innovative market. One of the two main passionate topics I have profoundly made connections to help develop an integrated design in one of our many projects in the MBUILD program, sustainable and affordable housing in vulnerable high-flood zone risk areas in Brazil. Marine renewable energy (MRE) is an emerging sector in the United States, with substantial potential to contribute to the country's clean energy goals. It includes energy derived from ocean resources like tides, waves, currents, and offshore wind. These renewable sources have the advantage of being highly predictable compared to other renewables sources such as solar and wind, which are subject to variability. However, overcoming challenges related to cost, infrastructure, environmental impacts, and regulatory processes will be crucial to the sector's future success.

🏗 The first #windturbines are going up in our largest wind farm in #lithuania! We erected the first 230-metre wind turbine in #Kelme I wind farm (80 MW) located in Western Lithuania. A total of 14 wind turbines will be installed, which will start producing about 270 gigawatt-hours of #renewable #energy per year. The erection of the wind turbines started in February and, as of today, the first one has reached its full height. The height of the tower of the wind turbine is 140 metres and the height of the peak is 230 metres, so the erection of 14 turbines will take several months. 📅 ⚡ “During the construction of the wind farm, several works are carried out at the same time, for example at the moment we are also building the last roads and foundations of the wind turbines. The construction of such a large wind farm requires #goodplanning , #accuracy and good #cooperation with subcontractors. We will do our best to be able to start producing #greenenergy in the new farm by the end of this year. The farm should be fully completed next year,” claims Lauri Ulm, the Head of Wind Developments at Enefit Green. ☘ Kelme district is one of the largest regions of renewable energy development in Lithuania and the three-part Kelme wind farm will in turn be Enefit Green's largest development project in Lithuania.

It's been a busy week for the industry with #ACES2024 and plenty of announcements, projects and policy changes: 🌬 Feasibility licences have been granted for a further six projects in the Gippsland offshore wind zone: - RWE's Kent Offshore Wind Farm - Origin Energy and RES's Navigator North offshore wind project - Corio Generation's Great Eastern offshore wind project - BlueFloat Energy Australia's Gippsland Dawn offshore wind project - Iberdrola Australia's Aurora Green offshore wind project - Ørsted's Gippsland 02 project Congratulations to all the proponents for this milestone! 🔌 In SA, the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act 2024 and the Regulations came into operation on 11 July. The Act changes the approval and regulatory regime for hydrogen and renewable energy projects by introducing licence requirements for 'regulated activities' which include generating hydrogen, exploring for and exploiting a renewable energy resource, infrastructure activities and associated infrastructure activities. Transitional provisions apply and operating projects may continue to operate but existing operators now have 12 months to obtain a licence or a permit under the HRE Act. An overview of the Act is available here https://lnkd.in/g3Pt-sj8 🐦 The NSW Government has released its response to the reviews of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and the native vegetation provisions of the Local Land Services Act 2013. The review found the state’s environment laws would not succeed without substantial changes and warned that half of the species under threat in NSW were on course to become extinct within the next 100 years. The response proposes legislation to enshrine a new state nature strategy with conservation and restoration targets, reform of the state’s offsets scheme, and developing maps identifying current and future areas of high biodiversity value to give guidance on where environmental impacts should be avoided.
