The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has released the NSW Biodiversity Outlook Report 2024, which outlines the status and trends of biodiversity across the State. Key findings include loss of habitat as the major driver of biodiversity loss, and the need for improved threatened species loss prevention. https://bit.ly/4ei39FI

Interested to see the contents of the now introduced 2030 Nature Strategy and Nature Accountbajlity Bill. It speaks to a whole-of-government approach and the importance of maintaining key biodiversity measures that are tied to Canada’s economy - fishieries the be exact, which has been siloed from biodiversity commitments. There’s currently a massive disconnect between Environment and Climate Change Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada so I’d love to see those two get on the same page (the one that’s based in science). 🧬

Dbytes #641 (9 October 2024) Info, news & views for anyone interested in biodiversity conservation and good environmental decision making “There is a critical role for science to help understand and describe business and government impacts and dependence on nature throughout value chains, identify appropriate forms of action to mitigate and avoid impacts, and support measurement, monitoring and reporting of outcomes for nature. At present, there exists a lack of coordination and standardisation of scientific advice for business and governments attempting to become nature positive.” Biodiversity Council [see item 3] -~<>~- In this issue of Dbytes 1. Identifying and assessing subsidies harmful to biodiversity in Australia 2. Challenging the neutrality myth in climate science and activism 3. What does Nature Positive mean for business and governments 4. Misconceptions about the valuation of ecosystem services 5. Private management of African protected areas improves wildlife and tourism outcomes but with security concerns in conflict regions 6. New California Law Means Clearer Path for Tribes to Co-Manage Lands and Waters 7. Botanists identify 33 global ‘dark spots’ with thousands of unknown plants 8. How do ecosystems collapse? The triple planetary crisis consists of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. But it's all connected. Climate change contributes to biodiversity loss through changing climatic zones which control the area a particular species inhabits, and also changes the physical characteristics of an ecosystem. Intense droughts, wildfires and floods kill off wildlife in huge numbers and climate change influences the spread of invasive species. Some years ago the biodiversity panel of the UN released a report on global biodiversity, and I wrote a summary of it. Soils host ¼ of our planet’s biodiversity. The earth beneath our feet is a vital carbon storehouse, making it critical to climate adaptation and mitigation. Protecting and replenishing the soil must be a priority and a factor in combating soil erosion is utilizing the nourishing properties of compost. We observe International Day for Biodiversity to spread awareness and stress the importance of biodiversity for our planet. It’s the only Earth we’ve got, let’s care for it sooner rather than later. Be part of The Plan!
