We are delighted to see the spotlight on the wonderful Kumar Paudel and team from Greenhood Nepal in the final episode of Sir David Attenborough’s BBC’s Asia, following the illegal trade in pangolin scales. Greenhood Nepal is one of our partners in a new project to counter wildlife trafficking in the trans-Himalayan region, along with the Wildlife Protection Society of India. It’s great to see its work to support national law enforcement agencies being recognised. Performance of Vietnam’s Criminal Justice System in Wildlife Trafficking Cases: 2022 Report Education for Nature – Vietnam (ENV) has released a report analyzing the performance of Vietnam’s criminal justice system in handling wildlife trafficking cases. Based on 156 cases recorded in ENV’s tracking system, the findings highlight continued progress in combating wildlife crime. Key Statistics: • 95% of trafficking seizures resulted in arrests. • 79% of cases with arrests led to prosecutions. • The average prison sentence was 3.01 years. The report compares data before and after the introduction of the revised Penal Code in 2018, which provided a stronger legal framework for prosecuting wildlife criminals. Arrest rates rose from 84.6% (2014-2017) to 92.2% in the five years following its implementation. Ms. Bui Thi Ha, ENV’s Deputy Director, noted that these results demonstrate a positive trend in Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen its justice system and address wildlife trafficking effectively. @_planettiger_ @ #safariwithplanettiger #tiger #indianwildlife #bigcat #wildlife #nature #mother #bandhavgarh #safari #peace #natgeotravelindia #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #ranthambore #wildlifephotography #leopard #sony # #instagood #trendingreels #trendingnow #viral #explore #tigres #tigers #association #associationplanetetigre #ngoplanettiger

Change wildlife crime status and sentencing to help police forces combat high-priority crimes Mounting evidence of a correlation between badger baiting and crimes of violence against women and drug gang offences. Badger baiting and other cruel activity against badgers happens every day in the UK. We need better deterrents and help the police catch more of the criminals involved." We continue our campaign to make badger crime notifiable and increase maximum sentences for wildlife crime from six months to five years, in line with domesticated animals. We call for an urgent meeting with the Home Office to push these issues up the agenda for action. Read our letter in full > https://lnkd.in/eDFJA-XU

This week, we were present at the Pacific Sub-Regional Forum on Crimes that Affect the Environment, organised by UNODC in #Fiji. The forum brought together members of wildlife enforcement networks in the Pacific to develop standard operating procedures for combating #wildlifecrime & identify common priority actions for the region. We presented a case study illustrating some of the steps involved in investigating a wildlife crime case, and the role of the Wildlife Justice Commission in supporting law enforcement agencies to utilise #intelligence to better target their investigative efforts. We also highlighted the convergence of wildlife crime with other forms of #organisedcrime, notably #drugtrafficking. To find out more, read our 15 case studies illustrating a range of converging crime types and typologies from around the world: https://bit.ly/3x6YxBi
