The UK has a big opportunity to solidify its role as a true champion for methane reduction! After giving evidence earlier this year to the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee, EIA Climate Campaigner Kim O'Dowd today welcomes the Committee's subsequent report. “The new Government is showing promising signs of leadership,” she said. “With a few decisive steps, it could solidify its role as a true champion for methane reduction.” Get the full story now at https://lnkd.in/exQwg84N #climate #climatechange #methane #UK

"Signing off climate plan without evidence it is achievable" If you have a goal for Net Zero, or have pledged the dates by which you will achieve it - have you actually got a manageable plan in place? Do you know your current footprint from which to work from? Trident help with all the above and more to guide you towards your goals, so reach out if this is relevant to you and your organisation. https://lnkd.in/e9BhTbNg

Our International Cooperation and Policy Campaigner, Bertha Letsoko, is talking to UJFM 95.4 about the Framework and Tracker for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). NDCs are the pledges made to cut greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. Engaging with NDCs helps you understand your country’s climate targets and advocate for stronger climate action. It's not just our Council's Net-Zero targets, but ours too. Council's can't pass laws, have little money and need the support of our communities. This includes, anchor institutions, schools, businesses, residents, sports clubs, pubs & faith groups all working together. What's your plan? #CommunityClimateAction #TheGreatCollaboration.
🌍 A new poll from the Local Government Association shows two thirds of councils aren't confident they will meet their climate targets, with nine in 10 saying they do not think central government has an adequately financed plan to deliver net zero. The campaign group Climate Emergency UK CIC, who track councils' action on climate change, have said local authorities should collectively call on the UK government to implement policies and funding to support councils to meet their net zero targets”. They said this could include a “fully funded statutory duty for climate action”. Read more in my piece for New Statesman Spotlight below. https://lnkd.in/d3cnzueq

Tackling methane emissions has great potential to ease the pace of the climate crisis. Cutting methane pollution is the fastest way to curb the pace of the climate crisis, and the oil and gas industry is “the ‘low-hanging fruit’ of methane mitigation,” said Rob Jackson, chair of the Global Carbon Project and a climate professor at Stanford University https://lnkd.in/gpzMHA9H

This is interesting it's certainly true that that Oil and Gas traders are ensuring that Voluntary offsets are not traded in an attempt to keep the price lower or worse to make sure the VCM fails. The problem is that the whole Standards and Registries should never have been put together. Together leads to a lack of quality and conflicts of interest. #actonclimate

The prime beneficiary of looser rules on offsets could be the industry largely responsible for the global climate disaster, writes Alastair Marsh.

BEAMA’s vision is for a low carbon, flexible and secure energy system in the UK. Government policy aims reflect a general sharing of this vision, and the Climate Change Committee’s publications demonstrate its importance in mitigating climate change with the UK in a leadership role. https://lnkd.in/eh7RQ5uW #AcceleratingElectrification #EnergyPolicy #Target2030

I’m sorry to say this is a fairly damning assessment of progress by the Scottish Government towards climate goals as set out by the U.K. Committee on Climate Change. Many of us have known for some time- one hardly needed to be Sherlock Holmes - that we were badly off track in a whole series of areas. But it’s still sobering to see the lack of progress in so many areas laid out so starkly ( or is that so Chris Stark ly?) My wish is that the Scottish Government in future focusses less on headland grabbing ‘world leading ambitions’- which too often just look like a desire to be different/better than the U.K. overall- and is more focussed on delivery Well worth a read #climatechange #climatecrisis #Scottishtargets #progress https://lnkd.in/eRX-vt75

I'm excited to share this insightful interview on just transition and climate justice in Zimbabwe. The conversation highlights the need for a gradual shift from coal dependence and the importance of reasonable time for adaptation. It's a call to action for urban planners like myself to be involved in climate justice conversations and ensure that our communities are well-informed and designed to be climate-resilient. The interview aired on NRTV features valuable insights shared by Elias Augustin from ActionAid Zimbabwe and I highly recommend taking the time to listen and gain great insights into Zimbabwe's roadmap for COP29 and beyond. Let us all be well conversant on what Climate Justice entails and push for a just transition that meet the needs of our communities and promotes climate adaptation and mitigation that prioritizes the most vulnerable. #climatejustice #sustainabledevelopment #resilientcommunities.
