Europe Needs #COP29 Host #Azerbaijan to Keep Exporting Natural Gas. Compared to the largest polluters on Earth who use Coal, more than 90% of Azerbaijan's power production comes Natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel. Azerbaijan's natural gas plays a key role in Europe's energy security & diversification. https://lnkd.in/gJ8NZP76

Top of the Daily Read: The World Needs to Get Serious About Methane Emissions — by Carl Pope. “Just five months ago at COP28 in Dubai, the United States – along every country that imports LNG from the Permian – signed a pledge to clean up more than 80% of the methane flaring and leaking into the atmosphere from oil and gas extraction," Carl Pope writes in a blog post today. "It was one a big pledge that gave hope to curbing the damage done by this dangerous greenhouse gas. But in the months since that pledge was signed, essentially nothing has been done to turn that pledge into action." —> Click below to read about two alarming examples - from Texas and from Germany - that illustrate the problems we face in curbing dangerous methane emissions. "We have the tools to prevent the reckless release of methane into our atmosphere and groups like #BloombergPhilanthropies, the #EnvironmentalDefenseFund, and #RMI are stepping in to help countries identify and stop leaks. That includes helping developing countries that often lack resources to dedicate to this problem. "It’s beyond time to get real results to protect our planet and it starts by taking serious action on methane now." Please read this fascinating story of my colleagues Chris Eales and Laurence Walker being denied entry to an energy conference in Baku. An event where many European firms were present, oil and gas majors as well as renewables companies. What are the implications for free and fair press coverage at the COP 29 in Baku later this year? Link to story in the comments section. #pressfreedom #gas #renewableenergy #COP29
My colleague Chris Eales and I this month visited Azerbaijan – the host of the upcoming COP29 gathering – to attend the Baku Energy Forum but were barred entry. So rather than covering important energy news from the event, we spent our time stuck in taxis, breathing in petrol, making endless phone calls from street cafes and even turning up at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other places. All to no avail. So what was the issue? And what are the implications for COP29, which will be held in Baku this November? Read our story in the comments below… #energy #Azerbaijan #COP29 #pressfreedom #gas

A pet peeve of mine is the COP tradition of issuing a press release declaring that there are thousands of oil lobbyists. At COP27, I double-checked the number of oil lobbyists claimed to be in the UAE delegation against the publicly available delegation list. It turned out they had included all the various people working in communications agencies to inflate their number. Looking at the press release on this for COP29, I see the following: "The top ten biggest trade associations in attendance representing the fossil fuel industry are the International Emissions Trading Association (43 delegates), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (27), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (17), the Federation of German Industries (13), BusinessEurope (13), Business Council for Sustainable Energy (12), OPEC Fund for International Development (12), King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (11), the International Council for Mining and Materials (10), the Chamber of Commerce of the United States (10)." Is it really accurate to say all these people in those organisations are oil lobbyists? Making exaggerated claims just undermines the whole COP process.

https://lnkd.in/dZUfCph7 More than 100 heads of state and government are expected to land in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, over the next few days and the first thing they are likely to notice is the smell of oil. The odour hangs heavy in the air, evidence of the abundance of fossil fuels in this small country on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Diplomats and global leaders will converge on Azerbaijan, one of the world's oldest oil producers, when it hosts the climate conference #COP29 in its capital, Baku, this week. Greenwashing charges The country, in the Caucasus region, is seeking to promote an image of being climate forward, while at the same time making plans to ramp up gas exports. President Ilham Aliyev, apparently once referred to oil and gas as a "gift of the gods". The city of Baku’s history is closely tied to oil. It was home to the world’s first oil fields in 1846 and remained the largest exporter of oil until 1899. Today, oil pump jacks are scattered across the city, a testament to Azerbaijan’s ongoing role as a significant energy exporter. Today was Energy day at COP29 Azerbaijan and I had the honor of engaging with Azerbaijan's Minister of Energy, Mikayil Jabbarov. Momentick's satellite-based emission intelligence is bridging the gap between ambitious climate goals and leak mitigation action on the ground. The first industrial oil well was drilled outside Baku in 1847 and a major part of the country’s GDP is anchored in O&G. For Azerbaijan, balancing economic development and climate action is a delicate issue. With that, everything I’m seeing here indicates that carbon emissions, and methane in particular, are being taken very seriously. #technology #sustainability #greentech #climatechange #naturalgas

Anyone else feel conflicted about these COP headlines? As the conference kicked off investigative reporters recorded the COP Chief Exec selling opportunities for oil and gas projects in Azerbaijan. The media also jumped on the President of Azerbaijan calling fossil fuels a 'gift of god'. Not defending fossil fuels, or the 2 actions: you could cut the irony with a knife and COP is rapidly becoming a joke. But the moral high ground has somehow been taken by countries like the UK which happily exploit their own oil and gas fields as much as they can, but tell other countries this is 'unacceptable'. And the paternalistic finger wagging: ‘caught’ sounds like parents telling off their teenager who’s been found smoking at school. Western nations who have grown rich on fossil fuels and can invest in a green energy transition (which he also promotes) are saying to poorer countries that they need to stop using their own natural resources for economic development. Is that seriously a just transition? The UK’s GDP is £3.3 Trillion. Azerbaijan’s is $72 Billion. A large amount of their population live in poverty. Azerbaijan are going to try and develop in whichever way they can, given the opportunity. We need to move away from fossil fuels, but the tone of these stories give me the ick.
