A recent report by Interpol estimates that by 2025, up to 90% of online content will be synthetically generated. This is largely driven by rapid advancements in generative AI technology and its increasing accessibility to the public. While this technology offers numerous benefits, it's important not to overlook the significant risks it poses. Deepfakes, for example, can create highly convincing impersonations of individuals, allowing fraudsters to bypass onboarding and re-authentication processes. Abusive AI-generated content is becoming more pervasive, more sophisticated, and harder to spot. Protecting the public from deepfake fraud, misinformation campaigns, and other malicious misuse of AI will require collaboration between government, the private sector, and civil society. At Microsoft, we understand that we are uniquely positioned to drive responsible AI efforts from the inside out, and this is not a role we take lightly. That’s why today, we released a new white paper detailing our policy recommendations for combatting harmful AI-generated content, including legislation for prosecuting deepfake fraud and scams, federal requirements for the labeling of synthetic content, and federal and state laws to protect women and children from exploitation and abuse online. Together, the tech industry, the nonprofit sector, and the public sector can take action against AI abuse and ensure that this technology is used for the benefit of society. "The rooster crows at dawn" may sound like a line from a bad spy movie, but it could be the security phrase that protects you from fraud. There has been an alarming rise in sophisticated fraud using a combination all of the data that's been collected about people - either legally or not - and AI. People have lost thousands to fraudsters pretending to be a grandchild in trouble calling for financial help in the past. Now, with the help of AI, it's hit a terrifying new level: video calls. With the ability of AI to generate full motion videos from a single picture, there is a new trend of realistic video calls to commit crimes spanning from account takeover to title fraud. This news story from FOX 26 Houston provides a glimpse into the new wave of social engineering attacks. One technique to prevent these types of attacks is to use a security phrase that only you and your family and friends would know. https://lnkd.in/gVk4_ERz Hugely important that congress acts to protect the public (especially seniors and children) from abusive deepfakes, hopefully while also guaranteeing protection of likeness for actors and musicians because that is a major challenge that is deeply scary in my world (the entertainment industry). The usage of unlicensed celebrity likenesses can also easily coincide with NCII, slander, and CSAM. It's also scary to see how AI deepfakes are allowing the current epidemic of financial fraud. I think industry and the public see eye to eye in that the protection of the public is key to the ethical applications of AI.
