Amazon Back at Iberdrola for More Offshore Wind Power Iberdrola and Amazon have expanded their long-term global clean power partnership by signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 159 MW of the 1.4 GW East Anglia Three offshore wind farm in the UK, equivalent to 700 GWh of clean electricity per year. The two companies announced in March 2023 a new global collaboration to support the development of large-scale renewable energy projects and leverage cloud computing technology to enhance digitalization in the energy transition. Two of Iberdrola’s previously announced offshore wind farms in Germany, Baltic Eagle and Windanker, will provide Amazon with 319 MW of clean energy, equivalent to the annual electricity needs of more than 314,000 European homes. Amazon has also signed PPAs with Iberdrola to enable projects in the US, Germany, and elsewhere in the UK. Over the life of these PPAs, the company has contracted 54,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola. According to Iberdrola, capacity from East Anglia Three will support Amazon’s commitment to match all the electricity powering its operations with 100 % renewable energy by 2025. The new agreement was announced at the Haizea Wind Group facility in Bilbao, where 50 monopiles are being manufactured. From there, the units will be shipped to the UK and used to support the Siemens Gamesa 14+ MW wind turbines. Located 69 km off the coast of Suffolk, the 1.4 GW offshore wind farm will be powered by 95 wind turbines. When East Anglia Three becomes fully operational, expected in 2026, the project will generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 1.3 million British homes, said Iberdrola. In addition to the signing of the PPA, Iberdrola and Amazon launched on 20 March the global “Journey to Cloud” programme, by further migrating Iberdrola’s operations to the Cloud and leveraging AWS’s High-Performance Computing services big data services, Iberdrola said. Projects already delivered include the use of the Cloud to halve the time it takes to run complex weather simulations, as well as Amazon Sagemaker Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning services to maximise the efficiency of renewable energy assets worldwide, said the Spanish company. “Today, two global leaders join forces in an agreement that will mean more energy independence, more local jobs and lower emissions on both sides of the Atlantic. Contract signed! Uniper and E.disnatur conclude agreement for wind onshore power🚨 We're thrilled to announce our first onshore wind PPA in Germany with e.disnatur Erneuerbare Energien GmbH This deal involves power delivery from seven wind onshore parks across East Germany, adding approximately 43 GWh average to our green energy portfolio. Starting January 2024, we’ll receive green power from E.disnatur for an initial one-year term. What’s more, we’ve also secured a direct agreement for green guarantees of origin (GoOs). We are excited to announce our next wave of renewable energy projects, enabling nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of additional clean energy over the next few years across the U.S. - part of the energy transformation roadmap we unveiled at CES earlier this year, which includes a goal to enable at least 10GW of new clean energy by 2030 once in service.    The portfolio includes renewable energy PPAs and community solar initiatives. Once in service, the community solar projects are expected to expand access to clean energy for thousands of households and communities, helping them save money on energy costs. The renewable energy purchase agreements will and hundreds of MWs of clean energy to grids in multiple states, creating 1000 new jobs and contributing $250 million in local tax revenue. Avangrid, part of Iberdrola, and Statkraft have formed a ‘new relationship between the two companies in the United States’ with the signing of a virtual PPA involving wind power in Illinois. Under the agreement, Statkraft will receive Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Avangrid’s 300 MW Streator Cayuga Ridge South Wind Farm in Illinois. Statkraft also has a PPA in place with Iberdrola for the latter’s Korytnica II wind farm in Poland. “We are grateful to partner with organizations like Statkraft that share our commitment to accelerating a clean energy transition,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO. “Climate change is a defining issue of our time and it is vital that we work together to meet the moment,” “Agreements like this are a good example of our active approach to managing merchant risk at Avangrid’s existing renewable energy facilities, while ensuring clean energy continues to flow to the communities where it’s needed most.” “This vPPA marks a significant milestone in the establishment and expansion of our PPA business in the United States”, stated Patrick Pfeiffer, Head of Statkraft US. “We are proud to partner with Avangrid as a continuation of our successful relationship with Iberdrola in Europe. Well done to all my Vestas colleagues for securing the largest global order for our V163-4.5 MW turbine AND the largest onshore wind order in Vestas' US history – coming in the wake of our recent manufacturing investment in Colorado. These milestones were boosted by the provisions under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). To stay on track with the 1.5 degrees pathway, we need more countries to dial up policy measures in support of renewable energy.
