"German cities are ready to play their part in shaping Europe's future." So says Helmut Dedy, Executive Director of the Association of German Cities, Deutscher Städtetag, in our new series of guest essays highlighting the crucial of cities in guarding Europe’s future. As the political landscape diversifies and extremism rises, achieving consensus has become increasingly challenging. Dedy emphasises the need for better communication of policies and a strong partnership between cities and the EU. He calls for a new Commissioner on urban affairs, an annual European city summit, and improved legislative processes that respect local government. German cities are ready to lead in addressing climate change, geopolitical conflicts, migration, and digitalisation, all while ensuring that Europe remains competitive. Really interesting talk on Global Population and surprisingly some positive thoughts on how we will change and adapt to this new world of lower populations. We will have to develop new ways to cope, above and beyond immigration.
