This morning, we released our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network, which illustrates our commitment to keep Ireland’s energy moving and be at the heart of Ireland’s future integrated energy system. Ireland’s €2.8 billion gas network will help Ireland reach net zero, as over the next twenty years the gas network will evolve to transport 100% renewable gases. By repurposing the gas network, we are supporting the State’s climate and energy targets. The pathway that Gas Networks Ireland has published today outlines a route by which the gas network can transition to net zero. Inevitably, some aspects will evolve as we move forward. However, we will remain flexible and responsive to achieve our commitment to delivering for Ireland. This roadmap will enable us to transition sequentially and ensure a robust and adaptive approach to achieving a fully decarbonised network over time. The pathway can be viewed on our website. We are witnessing a remarkable transformation in the European Union's energy landscape. According to a new report by Ember, for the first time ever, wind and solar power have generated more electricity than fossil fuels, accounting for 30% of the EU's electricity in the first half of 2024! During this period, fossil fuel generation dropped by 17%, highlighting a significant decline in oil, gas, and coal usage. Notably, emissions from the power sector have decreased by one-third since the first half of 2022, marking a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future. Pleased to see G7 are to target sixfold expansion of electricity storage (by 2030 from 2022 baseline) and that batteries will lead the charge (pun intended) - inline with IEA recommendations. We need end to end evolution of our energy systems to enable a transition to zero carbon renewables and secure local energy supplies. https://on.ft.com/4dbE1Qv via @FT

🌍⚡ Great strides are being made in the fight against climate change! In April, fossil fuels generated less than a quarter of the European Union's electricity. This significant milestone highlights the EU's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources. 🌿💡 This achievement demonstrates the growing impact of renewable energy in Europe, as wind, solar, and other green technologies continue to expand and replace traditional fossil fuels. The shift not only helps mitigate climate change but also promotes energy independence and innovation across the continent. While challenges such as grid integration, energy storage, and investment remain, this progress is a testament to what can be achieved with strong policies, technological advancements, and collaborative efforts. 🚀💬 I am excited to see these developments and look forward to contributing to the renewable energy sector. #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #EU #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #Innovation #GreenEnergy
