I'm here to talk to you about the distribution versus bulk grid impacts of electric vehicles. As we all know, EV adoption is accelerating rapidly and while the bulk grid here on the left is relatively well prepared, peak load from Ev's will be a major stressor on the distribution network here on the right. The reason for that really comes down to statistics. So let's look at some data. Here in blue, what you see is the average load per vehicle from a group of thousands of vehicles enrolled in energy programs. And so the average load is about 4-5 kilowatts per device and the peak is about .9. And so if we want to build enough bulk grid infrastructure to meet this future EB load, we need less than a kilowatt per device, which is which is significant, but not an enormous amount. If we can manage that load a little bit, we can actually cut that. Done to maybe half a kilowatt per device. So we need some bulk grid infrastructure, but not an enormous amount. Now let's look at the average load per vehicle from a small group of vehicles. This is 10 vehicles. In this case, what you see is a much more variable load and a load that peaks at a much higher value. And this really depends on how vehicles change their charging behavior from one day to the next. And because small groups of vehicles have much higher variability and much larger peaks. We need a lot more distribution infrastructure to meet future EV load, or we need smarter ways to manage that load. So manage charging allows us to electrify transportation while ensuring that we are able to do so within the limits of the grid.
