Could community energy reshape the future of the UK’s power landscape? As the Great British Energy Bill approaches the Report Stage in the House of Commons on October 29th, there’s a critical question on the table: should community energy be a core objective? Advocates say embedding community energy in the Bill would strengthen UK energy resilience, reduce reliance on the national grid, and promote local, cost-effective projects. We need to explore every opportunity to achieve Net Zero by 2030. Community energy should and could play a significant part of the plan. Just reading about a visioning exercise for community energy in the UK (paywalled sorry https://lnkd.in/ea4CuMG6) and it resonates with what I think our local community energy groups might say: - "The first priority was to “take climate change seriously”, which in practice was felt to mean setting detailed zero carbon targets for specific economic sectors, or geographical areas: not just a single UK-wide target. - Secondly, making sure there is space for smaller actors in the energy transition. This would require a mix of regulatory change to encourage local electricity supply and local energy markets; and ensuring regulation and technical standards keep energy data systems accessible to smaller actors, perhaps by keeping them open source. - Thirdly, a wholesale overhaul of the fundamental principles of energy regulation, so that the co-benefits community (and local) energy brings to other policy areas (health, local economies etc.) are recognised and valued. This suggestion reflects a recognition in the sector that, although ‘the regulators’ are seen by some as being obstructive to community energy, this is at least in part because they are bound by their duties that make little allowance for the sector on the basis of the wider co-benefits it offers"

As part of our series of #spotlights from Regen's recent paper 'Accelerating Clean British Power' - see below a series of recommendations focusing on grid. A key takeaway for me: We are massively in need of a taskforce/executive body that has laser-like focus on working up and implementing a strategic plan (with tangible actions) to ensure we have the supply chain in place to physically upgrade the electricity network. As an industry, we often talk about the 'great grid upgrade' as an abstract concept, but the reality is, if we don't have the physical infrastructure manufacturers, suppliers, installers and commissioners in-place, at the scale we need and in-time, we'll fall behind on our progress to net zero. #supplychain #greatgridupgrade #electricitynetwork #netzero #electrification #energysystem #infrastructureplanning #procurement

Today we continue our spotlighting of the actions outlined in our recent paper, Accelerating Clean British Power, which sets out the first steps for Labour to achieve its mission of making Britain a ‘clean energy superpower’. Today's theme is the grid. It's well established by now that connecting clean energy projects to the grid at pace is critical to achieving net zero. This has been a key focus for Regen. In May we published a paper which warned that the UK should learn the lessons from failing to invest earlier in the transmission network and ensure local grid upgrades are made a critical infrastructure priority over the next 25 years. With much encouraging action from the new government on clean energy, including on planning reform, the National Wealth Fund, the Solar Taskforce and GB Energy, there are a few quick wins that would help tackle the gridlock and set us on a path to net zero.
