Oxygen is crucial for all life. Regulation of rivers for generating hydropower is known to affect dissolved oxygen levels in the aquatic ecosystems, potentially affecting diverse range of organisms. We are investigating the extent, frequency and intensity of oxygen levels in regulated northern rivers in a new project across vast number of sites, with an aim to predict the observed biodiversity patterns and restoration potential. Establishing hundreds of acres of native vegetation in Central Oregon presents unique challenges when precipitation barely ticks over single digits and aggressive invasive species are prevalent in the region. These arid conditions require careful planning, patience, and perseverance. Although it takes time, the reward is clear: a thriving perennial grassland that supports a sustainable and beneficial landscape. A key part of this effort, both for the project and the surrounding community, is controlling noxious and invasive species. If left unchecked, these species threaten the ecological balance and safety of solar operations.
