At Energy Vault, we are proud to collaborate with Enel Green Power to advance our gravity energy storage system (GESS). Our partnership is focused on long duration #energystorage solutions that promise to revolutionize the energy storage sector with an efficient and circular approach. Commitment to #Sustainability: One of the unique aspects of our technology is its alignment with #circulareconomy principles. We use recycled materials, including fiberglass from decommissioned wind turbine blades, to construct our movable masses. This not only enhances the durability of the system but also mitigates waste. Strategic Partnership: Our collaboration with Enel Green Power enables us to thoroughly analyze the technical and economic performance of our #gravity energy storage solutions, as well as provide us with invaluable insights and data throughout the project’s construction, commissioning, and operational phases. The Texas facility, with a planned capacity of 18 MW/36 MWh, will serve as a testbed for long-term #storage technologies. Gravitational potential energy (GPE) storage is a cutting-edge solution in the renewable energy sector, allowing facilities to store excess energy and release it on demand. GPE is the energy an object possesses due to its position relative to a gravitational field. GPE storage systems lift masses during periods of excess energy using pumps or cranes and release them when needed. Types of GPE storage technology include pumped hydroelectric systems and gravity batteries. Pumped hydroelectric storage involves two water reservoirs at different levels, converting electrical energy into GPE by pumping water to a higher reservoir and releasing it to generate electricity when needed. Gravity batteries lift weighed blocks during low energy demand periods and use them to generate electricity during peak times. Advantages of GPE storage technologies include longevity, durability, and minimal environmental impacts. These innovative solutions play a crucial role in leveling energy supply peaks and troughs while promoting sustainability in the energy sector. With the EU's ambitious goal to decarbonize 30% of primary steel production by 2030, the time for innovation is now! 🔍 Key Insights:  This study developed a comprehensive performance and degradation model for alkaline water electrolysers, analyzing their responses to different power input profiles to identify the most efficient and cost-effective operating strategies. This research work examines three distinct scenarios 🔶 100% Renewable Energy Supply: Power sourced entirely from solar and wind. 🔷 Constant Grid Supply: A stable power supply from the grid. 🔶 Variable Load Supply: Fluctuating power supply between 66% and 100% of the electrolyser's nominal capacity. 📊 Findings 🔶Scenario 3 (Variable Load) achieved the highest average efficiency over ten years. 🔷Scenario 2 (Constant Grid Supply) resulted in the lowest degradation. 🔶Scenario 1 (100% Renewables) offered the lowest electricity costs. The model stands out in the literature, featuring an advanced thermal model with flowing electrolyte and one of the pioneering degradation models for electrolysers. 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 Furthermore, technological advancements coupled with integration of the IIOT devices to improve efficiency by the market players further extend profitable opportunities to the market players in the forecast period of 2022 to 2029. For instance, in July 2017, N.T.N. Corporation unveiled the N.T.N. Micro Hydro Turbine, a tiny hydroelectric generator with independent power that can generate electricity effectively when installed in an existing water channel. Moreover, numerous favorable initiatives and subsidies provided by the government is estimated to offer lucrative opportunities to the market growth. For instance, Section 242 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 authorized cash for incentives to promote the generation of hydroelectricity in 2014. This statute allows for maximum compensation of $750,000 per year and allows industry participants to receive up to 1.8 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy generated. Additionally, industry participants are eligible to obtain tax credits up to 1.1 cents per kWh under the renewable electricity production tax credit system.
