Is it possible to stop “Addison's disease” and other autoimmune diseases? That is the hope of Olle Kämpe, who is a clinical researcher at Karolinska Institutet. It is not known what initiates an auto immune reaction, just that it starts several years before the patients come to clinical care. Kämpe and his group has discovered that the immune system in all patients with Addison's disease reacted to the very same substance – the enzyme 21-hydroxylase. Kämpe and this team are working on a promising treatment for patients with Addison's. You’ll meet Olle Kämpe and his patient Eva Raffner. #research #medicine #addisondisease #autoimmunediseases #immunology Karolinska Institutet Olle Kämpe

A PolyBio-supported study in collaboration with the Long-Term Impact of Infection with Novel Coronavirus (LIINC) team out of UCSF found a key difference in immune cell function between Long COVID patients and Controls. Researchers found that the percentage of cytotoxic natural killer (NK) cells, crucial immune cells responsible for clearing virus-infected cells, was notably reduced in people with long COVID compared to those who had fully recovered from COVID-19. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) impacts ~391 million people worldwide. There are many disease mechanisms involved in COPD, meaning each individual patient is different. For that reason, we are exploring multiple disease pathways to drive innovation, working to ensure the right care options are available to the right patients, at the right time. Learn more about our efforts in this new STAT article by Caterina Brindicci, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Late Respiratory and Immunology at AstraZeneca https://learn.az/6041dRkFd #WhatScienceCanDo #ATS2024
