While my bread and butter is advising leadership teams on corporate culture and reputation challenges, I keep a close pulse on the entrepreneurship and innovations emerging from Belgium. This is the topic of my latest column (in Dutch) in Trends Kanaal Z, the Belgian economic magazine. A record number of entrepreneurs are aspiring for success in the US, making this a thrilling era for Belgian innovation. The US - with its 25 trillion dollar GDP, 340 million residents and abundant capital - is the world's largest and most dynamic consumer market. However, the journey from aspiration to achievement involves navigating a maze of rules and regulations. This is where the vibrant and independent Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce (BelCham) steps in. Together with our government representatives, the BelCham community assists in simplifying these complexities. 20 ambitious Belgian companies participated in BelCham’s online ‘US Readiness’ program this month, eager to penetrate the American market. This meticulously crafted course aids in sharpening their expansion plans, providing expert advice tailored to promoting growth and overcoming obstacles. Having listened in on this program, I'm inspired by the courage, diversity, and world-class talent emanating from our country. The five-day immersion experience has left me feeling confident in the future of Belgian entrepreneurship on the global stage. Let's continue to support and celebrate the innovative spirit of our entrepreneurs! How do we grow Winnipeg in the right direction? Today, we hosted a very special #smallbusinessweek October Luncheon with business incentive expert and EY Canada Partner Dharmesh Gandhi to answer the question. 300 local leaders joined us at RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, where Dharmesh sat down with Chamber Board Chair and Little Brown Jug Brewing Company Founder Kevin Selch to explore the answers – from developing our outside investment, to setting up proper supports for entrepreneurs and startups, to finally smashing the stereotype that you need to move to a bigger city to find success in your industry. Here are our key takeaways: 1. We can finally bin the idea you need to move to Toronto or Vancouver to grow your business. One of a medium-sized city like Winnipeg’s greatest advantages is a tight-knit community, where entrepreneurs can and do help other entrepreneurs through networking and mentorship. 2. Explore your government incentives! Dharmesh highlighted a number of credits related to tech and sustainability, including a 30% refundable credit for clean technologies. Researching what's available to support you in your product category, industry or desired initiative is a great place to start. 3. Mentorship is critical to growing our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Startup leaders, new entrepreneurs, and employees will all benefit from reaching out to someone in a position you aspire to, whether they're in your product category or not. On the other hand, if you're asked to be a mentor, it's your responsibility to share your wisdom and experience with the next generation. Thank you to everyone who came out, and thanks so much to Dharmesh for being such an insightful, candid, and inspiring guest – we hope to see you again! And huge thanks to our sponsors for making today’s event possible: Title Sponsors: Taylor McCaffrey LLP Ducks Unlimited Canada Want to lead, connect and grow with us? “Belgium has the second highest rate for fear of failure of all 29 innovation-driven economies in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (2014).” I know this blog post by AMS is 4 years old, but the intro deeply resonates with me and I feel is still quite relevant today. “This fear is deeply rooted in our culture, as is demonstrated by the world's fifth highest score for risk avoidance. This culturally determined risk avoidance is also deeply rooted in our institutional framework, with a sixth and eighth highest score in perceived pressure from taxes & bureaucracy (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) and the rigidity of labor legislation (OECD). Because entrepreneurs also feel little protected by the business failure & dissolution law, they tend to keep struggling companies alive much longer than other countries instead of just pulling the plug.” #failingforward

The Australian Financial Review Entrepreneur summit this week was awesome. I enjoyed the breadth of topics covered; but most of all, I really loved that the speakers on the day were not afraid to share honest perspectives – and to really have a view on things. Highlights on the day included for me: 🌠 The inspirational story of Kristy Chong OAM who built a business as a sole female founder, and sold it for $140m. 💡 The perspective that while Australia may not have as deep capital markets as the US, the “Goldilock effect” of having a smaller population, high GDP per capital, and an oligopolistic economy ripe for disruption makes it a prime place to start a tech business. 🌍 Brilliant Climate Tech Businesses shedding light on the reality of what it takes to build a successful climate tech business, how to raise capital to support the build of such businesses, and how to galvanize and support staff on such a bold mission. On a day where the Climate Tech Samsara Eco $100m capital raise has been announced, the future for our planet seems to look that much brighter.
