𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿? At SeenCare, we often use the term ‘𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿’ to describe our support workers. This leads to the occasional question about what we actually mean by this title. In our opinion, specialist is a term that can apply to a range of professionals. In essence, it means that someone has developed an 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮. Because SeenCare’s focus is delivering supports to NDIS participants with high medical needs, we mainly use the term ‘specialist’ in a healthcare context. When we say 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿, we are referring to a disability support worker who has advanced skills in providing healthcare supports (along with standard core competencies). These advanced skills enable our support workers to assist with tasks like: • 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 - including complex bowel care, tracheostomy management, enteral feeding, etc • 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - assistance with attending appointments and communicating with healthcare professionals • 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - support with self-management tasks and symptom monitoring • 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 - help to start and maintain healthy lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise It’s important to note that while our specialist support workers do undertake more advanced care tasks—this is always done 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 of a suitably trained healthcare professional. Check out the attached booklet for full details on how our specialist support workers, bulk-billing GPs and home nurses all work together to deliver our unique model of integrated care. #NDIS #Disability #Healthcare #SupportWorkers
