COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN PUBLIC HEALTH : The roles of Group facilitation and Public Speaking Community Engagement is the process of actively involving the community in the design, implementation and evaluation of health innovations, programs or services Getting the community involved can be achieved through very effective interaction which begins with facilitation and public speaking When health professionals facilitate group discussions and communicate clear information to the public, the results can be way beyond expectations. These include but are not limilimited to a) Building trust and rapport with community members . The people find the health workers dependable, reliable and available - Educating audiences about health issues and thereby promoting awareness. Indirectly building their capacity with regards to those health issues. (b) Encouraging community participation and engagement. They naturally assume a sense of belonging and that of a stakeholder (c) Fostering collaboration and partnership among stakeholders. Everyone is informed and therefore common understanding is enhanced (d) Gathering feedback and concerns from the community thereby giving the people a medium to actively voice their reservations about the program or services, (e) Promoting behavior change and healthy practices. This is the desire of any public health professional. (f) Supporting community-led initiatives and empowerment.Once confidence in the health workers has been cultivated it becomes easy to enlist their participation even in other health programs From my personal experience on the field I have discovered that several things help group facilitation e.g 1. Active listening- Once you have made yourself clear at the beginning, learn to listen well 2. Open-ended questioning - Don’t give the impression of “pass or fail” questions 3. Reflective summarizing- make sure the contributed opinions or views or answers are apparent as you professionally summarize 4. Encouraging participation from all group members- No one or group must be left behind 5. Managing conflicts and difficult conversations- once confidence is built there is a high chance of managing difficulties to the advantage of the community For effective public speaking, it is important we consider the following (i) Clear and concise messaging ambiguity must be avoided at all times and with all audiences (ii) Storytelling and narrative techniques- build imaginary pictures or graphics into your engagement (iii) Visual aid usage. As much as possible (iv) Audience engagement and interaction- avoid a situation where they lose interest or get tired or distracted (V). Confident and empathetic delivery- put yourself in their shoes! By leveraging these skills, public health professionals can effectively engage with communities, promote health equity, and drive positive change. #communityengagement #publichealthskills #costeffectivepublichealth #fortunehealthplusinitiatives

Tonight we will hear if we have won either of the two awards we have been shortlisted for in the NHS Communicate 2024 awards – ‘Best use of digital communications and engagement’ and ‘Promoting diversity and inclusion in communications.’ Members of our team are gathering tonight to be present at the online event and will celebrate equally whether we win or not. For we are celebrating much more than recognition of a job we do well - we are celebrating the opportunity to do our jobs well - through relationships and generosity of time that our #SWBfamily and our patients and loved ones give us to tell their stories in ways which resonate with our audiences. As communicators in health we use the channels available to us to share essential messages. Both an early warning system and a trusted voice we use our platforms wisely and in consideration of consequences, which is why after deliberation we chose to add TikTok to our channels and share important health messages on the platform. The conversations we have started have not all been positive, but that is fine, we take the knocks in pursuit of the gains as we see lives saved in explanation of bowel screening, symptom awareness and in translating our content into the languages commonly requested by patients across our Trust. And, as a matter of course everything we do promotes diversity and inclusion – it should do - it represents us and as a small comms team we are proud of our diversity. So, whether we win or not we will continue to push ahead and take delight in engagement, for we are very much aware that all we do is in partnership, communication being a two way street, whether we are sharing messages directly with our communities, the media for cascade or our workforce we do so with their help, and for that we are grateful. What does brilliant listening look like? I was delighted to read a case study passed to me by fellow #ListeningArmy member Bridget Aherne Chart.PR. It is one of the best examples I've seen of the power of listening in practice. The story is that of NHS Orkney, one of six North Scotland Health Boards. You can read the full story of their plans in the document entitled “Delivering what matters to our community: 2024-2028” at https://shorturl.at/DMV37. Simple question to start. How does NHS Orkney know what matters to their community, patients and employees? Simple – they’ve listened. CEO Laura Skaife-Knight is clear. Each conversation is an opportunity to listen and to make a positive difference. She explains how NHS Orkney have heard from many hundreds of people about what matters most to them and the document demonstrates how their views have informed NHS Orkney’s new strategy. I love the language. Laura writes “Our new Corporate Strategy is our promise to you, our community, and to Team Orkney (our staff), about what we will be prioritising and focusing on to make year-on-year improvements”. The strategy document is well set out. It is easy for anyone, whether key stakeholder or casual reader, to understand quickly what the most important issues are, how they know that, and what the respective plans. These plans are not in the form of a set of a few ‘woolly’ high level long term corporate objectives. There are clear five year plans with a set of detailed year one activities against each goal. A set of transparent commitments they can be held accountable against. It looks like they used a range of listening tools over a three month period to fully understand their challenges. These included surveys, face to face community and partner sessions and staff listening sessions. Perhaps it helps that CEO Laura is a former Communications Director and lists organisational culture change, staff engagement and communications among her areas of excellence. Maybe this is the answer to the question about whether comms folks should have a 'seat at the table'? In this case the answer is yes, as a CEO, especially if they are going to inspire such brilliant work. Anyone interested in listening, and thinking about how listening can have direct impact right at the heart of a business should have a read of this. It is an excellent piece of work. #listening #strategy #engagement

Once again had the pleasure last week of designing and delivering a full day session for a team of 40 specialists within the NHS. Shinning a spotlight on social & communication styles, and exploring practical tools and techniques to help connection. A really enjoyable day with lots of great conversations and useful outcomes. Looking forward to discussing the impact with the team in the New Year! #teamwork, #communication, #McCrudden,
