The North Sea energy workforce offers an unrivalled pool of skilled oil and gas specialists that must be retained to power the transition to clean energy. ✅ A successful homegrown energy transition using existing skills could see the UK energy workforce swell by 50% with new jobs bringing the total number employed in the sector to 225,000 by 2030. ✅ More than 90% of all those currently working in oil and gas production and its associated supply chain have skills that are potentially transferable to wind, carbon capture, usage and storage and clean hydrogen energy production. ✅ It is vital that the transition from dependence on oil and gas is effectively managed to ensure the existing skills of these workers are taken into account so they can move smoothly into new roles. ✅ It is essential that education systems are adapted to future workforce requirements and offers similar status to students pursuing technical instead of academic pathways, with better long-term funding for apprenticeships at all levels. We need to develop and make available vocational pathways for young people and those not in work so we can plug the shortage of skilled technical trades. 👉 Read the report here: https://ow.ly/igVE50RiVV4

What do these guys have in common? Looking at the photo, it might be hard to guess. At a first glance, you can tell that one works with large industrial projects. The other appears to be an “office guy”. Jonas is an apprentice working at the Kollsnes gas processing plant and is at the beginning of his career. Sverre, who has worked for Equinor for more than 40 years, was the project director at Northern Lights, our carbon transport and storage facility. I met them both earlier this year, visiting Øygarden outside Bergen. They are shaping today and tomorrow. Jonas, like most in our company, produces the energy that is needed today. Sverre, has prepared our company for a different tomorrow. Yet, both are guided by the same mindset. In Equinor we call it “searching for better”. It is about people’s efforts, ideas, expertise and ability to collaborate. Their inherent drive to solve a difficult task. Meeting people like Jonas and Sverre makes me an optimist. It gives me confidence that we will contribute with a wide span of solutions that are needed both today and for tomorrow. Photos: Ole Jørgen Bratland, Kjersti Nordøy, Equinor

The skills in the oil and gas industry, through the entire supply chain, are highly valuable and transferable. The future of the energy industry will rely on the wealth of knowledge and skills of those already working in it today, and cross sector collaboration and collective planning will be key to achieving the new government’s goals in the UK energy sector.

A new private sector jobs and skills initiative was launched last week: "The JET SEP, which is aligned to SA’s Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JET-IP) that sets out a development road map for the energy and automotive sectors and plans to develop a green hydrogen sector, will provide a “demand-led” approach to skilling, said Soobramoney. This means that, working with companies such as Eskom, Sasol, Sappi and Anglo American it will identify what skills are needed to make sure those who are trained through the programme will be assured of a job." Phase 1 of the programme will run until January 2025, and will focus on developing "a skills and jobs gap fact base which will help in determining the number and scope of jobs potentially available in different sectors". Skills training will then start after that. All good wishes to those involved, financial flows to cover such programmes are an essential part of achieving success in the context of our devastatingly high unemployment rate. https://lnkd.in/d884kgQc
