The Waning Prestige of MBA Rankings
According to a recent survey by the AMBA, business school rankings, once highly prestigious, are seeing a decline in their perceived value among aspiring students. The survey involved over 300 candidates and found that 55% believe these rankings have lost their luster, though 97% still consider them crucial in choosing where to study. Similarly, a survey of admissions officers from 70 U.S. business schools found that 50% felt rankings had lost prestige, a significant increase from previous years.
Despite these perceptions, rankings remain vital, especially for international applicants unfamiliar with U.S. institutions. Publications like the Financial Times and US News & World Report continue to release annual lists influencing decisions. Recent scandals, including rankings fraud, have contributed to skepticism about their reliability. Some admissions officers criticize the rankings as revenue-generating schemes for publishers, with others highlighting their role in recruitment and fundraising.
Rankings are important because of their impact on career prospects, particularly in key business centers like New York, Boston, and San Francisco, where local connections can lead to job opportunities. As business school rankings become more crowded with new entries like LinkedIn’s MBA ranking, the debate over their relevance and influence continues.
