“Why did you learn to speak Spanish?”, my daughter asked me. I thought back to the moment I started an international job being an area manager for Southern Europe, in which #Spain was special as the distributor didn’t speak English that well. Beside learning ‘business Spanish’, being able to chitchat about the weather, food, sports and regional differences appeared to be just as important. Do you want to earn respect, don’t ask for ‘sauce’ when eating fish. I saw it happen at my table when the older salesman corrected the younger marketing manager. “You won’t taste the fish anymore!” This marketing manager was my direct contact and the only one able to communicate a little bit in English. As the sales had to go up in Spain, I addressed this problem to him several times. Without success. I asked for a meeting where his boss was included. The marketing manager translated the English conversation into Spanish as the boss only spoke Spanish. When I addressed the reason for the meeting being the low sales figures, I noticed the marketing manager translated the part about his own mistakes ‘wrong’. The boss did not understand the reason of the meeting and she only wanted to spend her time to solve problems but it seemed there weren’t any. Then I stepped in and in Spanish I explained that we really had a sales problem. The boss then understood the marketing manager had left out some crucial information and was furious. Due to this insight she urged the marketing manager to do a better job and sales went up. After that my good relationship with the marketing manager wasn’t that good anymore for a while. But should I not have heared their internal miscommunication, I for sure would not have reached my sales targets. So being able to understand and talk Spanish saved me here. After last night's AFCON quarterfinal between Nigeria and South Africa's match, I received a call from an erstwhile friend giving in details about Nigeria's win and a few mistakes they made. While listening to him I was arguing in my mind spontaneously and just at that moment he noticed the listening sway even without physical conversation. If I could magically suggest one super skill set in customer service it would be listening. In "listening" we don't only shut our mouths long enough for the other person to talk, but also shut down the voice in our heads when it tries to tell us what to say next. Beyond Customer Service, listening is so fundamental to human interaction. Great listening goes beyond hearing someone's words; it also means connecting with the communicator's communicative feelings, this way we get relaxed which makes the communication more pleasurable. Today is a good day to sharpen our listening skills by practicing throughout the day in low-stress situations, such as conversations with spouses, siblings, colleagues at work, or sales clerks. This will help you (that is if you apply it, else it will add to your knowledge instead of your purse) Don't limit your business by seeing the people in your area as your customers. . That is a recipe to hunger. Learn to attract people from other communities or local governments to buying from you. Learn how to use online platforms to boost your sales. ( if you don't know how to, you can pay someone to do it for you or someone to teach how to) Don't sell on credit. ( if you must do because the person is a person of your person then know how to collect back.) Look for someone who sells to your type of customer( that is if you know who buys from you) and collaborate. Advertise what you do as often as possible(instead of talking about Nigeria or Tinubu).
