Hibarri’s Role in Empowering Farmers by Cutting Out Middlemen in the name of Greater Profit One of the most significant challenges for South African farmers is the loss of profits to middlemen who charge high commissions and make the trade process unnecessarily complicated. A 2022 PwC report found that farmers in South Africa lose as much as 30% of their profits due to the involvement of intermediaries. Hibarri is changing that by allowing farmers to connect directly with buyers. By cutting out the middlemen, farmers can retain more of their earnings and establish long-term, profitable relationships with buyers. One small-scale farmer in the Western Cape reported a 30% increase in net profits within just four months of switching to Hibarri’s platform. This is just one example of how cutting out middlemen can boost farmers’ financial independence and economic success. The use of use of quality-improved high-yielding and drought-tolerant seed varieties is a means to enabling smallholder farmers to achieve optimal yields and incomes from their farm enterprises. Access to high-quality seeds, however, remains a challenge for smallholder farmers in the region. GIZ Promoting Rural Development in Uganda Programme (PRUDEV), in collaboration with Ngetta Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Ngetta ZARDI), is building the capacities of farmers in Northern Uganda to produce and multiply high-quality seeds. This is done by enabling them to establish Local Seed Businesses through targeted trainings. This approach not only makes it easier for farmers in local communities to access high-quality seeds but also creates local seed entrepreneurs who supply their fellow farmers with high-quality seeds.
