The question is why? I spend most of my time as a product marketing manager working in web3 to identify common barriers to adoption plaguing the ecosystem and I believe the major issue is that founders and their teams often prioritize short-term gains over long term value, chasing “degens” - users who jump from protocol to protocol seeking quick profits. I strongly believe this needs to change for a sustainable ecosystem to emerge, and here’s why: 1. Long-Term Value Focus The reason we see so many buggy half-baked features out here in the ecosystem is that founders keep chasing “degens.” Degens’ only motivation is quick wins. So there must be an actual plan beyond the pre-launch and post-launch buzz. In other words, to thrive, founders need to build products that offer depth and reliability, not just quick wins. 2. Under-utilization of the Technology’s True Potential: We must understand that blockchain isn’t just for speculative trading. Yes, tokens are part of the entire framework ultimately, but there’s more. Blockchain promises to revolutionize industries by providing decentralized solutions. The question is, are we sure that’s still our primary objective? I believe we have got to focus more on solving real-world problems to stay on track. 3. A Shift to Mainstream Adoption We must create user experiences that are intuitive and quick. Many protocols out there are glitchy or confusing and this continues to impact adoption, especially with non-web3 natives. We need to build products that deliver end-to-end life cycle experience that users can complete in minutes, not hours or days. Founders must start investing in robust security and technologies that mainstream users can trust and understand. 4. From Degens to Conservatists Our actual market is with those committed to building and using blockchain for its transformative potential, not just for fleeting profits. These are the people who will help us grow sustainably. I doubt if I’m ever going to shift ground on what I think of degens and their net negative impact on the web3 ecosystem. We must shift our focus from this casino approach we have unwittingly approved of in the ecosystem to long-term planning and design. This means having these difficult conversations we had long avoided, especially with out teams and investors. This way we can ensure we are not deviating from the true principles of blockchain and the web3 ecosystem. Its design breaks out of the constraints of the blockchain, and there is no limit to the impossible triangle of the blockchain. Cryptocurrency is better than advanced ideas, but its development is slow. According to statistics from PANews, at the end of 2022, there are 1,259 active DAPPs in Ethereum, which is really pitiful. The chainless platform adopts the idea of cryptocurrency and designs a transparent and centralized platform. The external characteristics are no different from the blockchain ledger. It is also a platform that implements openness and fairness and cannot be tampered with. Only in this way can the design compete with the ease of use of Web2, be popularized on a large scale, and make the number of DAPPs jump by an order of magnitude. Chainless design has no technical innovation and uses mature technology; it has unique innovations in products, incentives, communities, and core teams. This series has 5 sections in total. Third, Business model innovation of chainless systems Customer reuse is the value of the platform Why do bloggers go to Weibo? Why do podcasters go to YouTube? The reason is that the platform has a large number of users, and the platform has complete facilities. The broadcasters only need to do the business they are good at. Users feel like they have entered a large shopping mall to purchase their favorite products (hosts). The more products there are, the more users there will be, but for any product (broadcaster), the efficiency of user reuse is low. The main reason is that users cannot scan all the products within a certain period and find their favorite products. For traditional shopping malls, if products want to be sold, they must rely on in-store shopping advertising or shopping guides. At the same time, Internet platforms make recommendations based on the characteristics of customers. When users become accustomed to being “served” by recommendations, they “lose” their ability to search. What you see is what the platform recommends to you. Obviously, the fate of broadcasters and bloggers is in the hands of the platform. What should the host do if he refuses to accept his fate? “bribe” the platform, pay advertising fees to the platform, and gain exposure. The rapid development of technology shouldn't come as a surprise. It has never been stagnant. Now, Web3 is poised to displace its predecessors. Imagine how outdated Web 1.0 and 2.0 would seem in today’s world. Web 1.0 spanned from 1990 to 2004. It was a "read-only" web where users could only consume content without interacting or contributing. There was no way to publish content or respond to what companies posted. User interaction was non-existent, which is why it’s often referred to as the "READ-ONLY Web." Most of the platforms were company-owned, and users merely consumed what was shared. Examples of Web 1.0 sites include wapka.com, waptrick.com, sefan.ru, and wapdam—platforms we once used to download games. Following this, we witnessed a significant evolution from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 around 2004, which revolutionized the internet. These changes allowed users to interact with each other, read, and publish content. Users were no longer just consumers; they could also contribute content, creating a user-to-user (U2U) dynamic. Moreover, Web 2.0 introduced monetization opportunities, enabling users to earn money on these platforms. Examples include the social media platforms we use today: Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and others. However, in Web 2.0, user data security is a significant concern. Users must complete various verification processes, and personal data is often stored on centralized servers, making it vulnerable. Web 3 is both the easiest and the most challenging to describe. It doesn’t have a universally agreed-upon definition, but the concept can be broken down to make it relatable. Web 3 represents a decentralized internet where users can read, write, and own their digital assets. It’s a system that gives users full control over their assets through blockchain technology. The term "Web 3" was coined by Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum, after Ethereum's launch in 2014. This term is often used to describe the shift towards user ownership in blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs. Everything in Web 3 is built on blockchain technology, facilitated by smart contracts. How do you gain ownership rights on Web 3? Consider the games you play on Web 2, where you purchase in-game items or assets with the points you earn. In Web 2, these assets have no real value outside of the game. However, in Web 3, you can truly own these assets and transfer them to your wallet. Your data and assets reside on the blockchain, ensuring their security and ownership. Additionally, in Web 3, you are the owner of your data—no one else has rights over it. There’s no need for password sign-ups. Instead, robust security is provided through seed phrases. However, if you lose or forget your seed phrase, your assets are irretrievable.
