Emily Siner’s Post

Newsroom leaders around the country still reach out to ask me about this graphic. In 2019, I worked with Nashville Public Radio to create newsroom story standards. Because in daily news, you might have a fuzzy sense of why your editor assigned you one story over another, or what sources you should pursue in your reporting. But those kind of critical news judgments are rarely communicated explicitly — so they fall between the cracks. The result wasn't a generic document. We discussed these story standards as a team and crystalized the vision among leadership. The result was an easy-to-read graphic, unique to our newsroom, that everyone could easily understand and refer to. Let me facilitate a story standards discussion (and craft a beautiful document) for your own team! I love working with small and mid-size newsroom leaders on how to level up their reporting, and I have availability this fall.

Fantastic! I know many in my former newsroom craved clarity like this — and rarely got it! 👏🏽
