I am taking part in a month-long Mental Hygiene study and it came with some great sample activities. Link in the comments. I think leaders especially need to make sure to reserve time to recharge and reflect and these activities are short and really promote ways to let go of stress and re-focus. The term “mental hygiene” refers to daily activities that support and maintain mental health. Public health guidelines tell us that we need to do small tasks daily to maintain our physical and dental hygiene, like showering and brushing our teeth. The concept here is to extend the same concept to mental health. Just like going to the gym is about building up our strength, mental hygiene is about building up that mental muscle. It’s an important way to maintain good mental health and build the resilience we need to face challenges in the future. Do you take time every day for mental hygiene?
After 25 years, I have recently found coding to be a fun way to reawaken a creative side of my brain that has been dormant for some time. It's such an immersive activity that it gets me out of my "normal" perspective, much like composing music does (when I have time). But it does require that you carve out sufficient time to do so ... it's not something you jump in and out of between calls.
100% for all of us to work on mental hygiene. There's also a responsibility for all of us to work through tough times. Too many people these days break far too quickly and lean on these types of areas as excuses to tap out way too early.
Mental hygiene to me is: taking time to write down my gratitudes for the day. I aim to make it as simple as possible: I use a notion workplace and I set an alarm for ten minutes before bed.
Thanks for the link Emily! This list is fantastic. My two daily must do activities to keep me centered and to manage stress are 1) getting exposure to nature and 2) physical exercise. Yoga a few times a week as well.
