Did you know that many cities in the Asia-Pacific region are facing the alarming threat of land subsidence? This phenomenon, caused by decades of rapid development, resource extraction and by tectonics movement, coupled with climate-related impacts, puts communities and cities at serious risk.🌍 In December 2023, ESCAP and UN-Habitat convened an Expert Group Meeting on "Asia-Pacific's Sinking of Cities". This meeting aimed to delve into the causes and impacts of land subsidence, explore solutions and resources to mitigate its effects. Building urban resilience is the key to addressing this crisis. Urban land subsidence, or the gradual sinking of cities, is a growing issue affecting areas around the world, including New York, Venice, Mumbai, and Jakarta. This phenomenon happens when the ground beneath a city slowly settles or sinks, and it can have severe consequences for urban areas. Several key factors contribute to this issue, including natural seismic movements, the over-extraction of groundwater, and heavy construction on soils that cannot support such weight long-term. In New York City, for example, the ground is sinking partly due to the immense weight of its buildings. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the city’s infrastructure—comprising 1.68 trillion pounds of concrete, glass, and steel—rests on an area of just 777 square kilometers. Over time, this extreme load compresses the soil, causing the land to settle. To address the problem, cities need a well-rounded strategy involving both public and private stakeholders. Solutions may include stricter construction regulations, sustainable groundwater management, and enhanced monitoring of soil stability. Investing in urban infrastructure is a big focus in Central Asia The population of Central Asia will go up from 79.8 million in 2023 to 94.4 million by 2025 (UN estimate). At the same time, the urban population will have reached 57 million. It will lead to an increase in the #urbanisation rate from 49% to 61%. Now, the huge policy task is to accompany urbanization by the development of sustainable сivil engineering and social infrastructure in Central Asian cities. With more and more people living in cities, we need to invest more in roads, public transport, water and heat supply as well as in #social infrastructure (healthcare and education facilities, public spaces, parks, sports and cultural facilities). For example, as cities in Central Asia grow, they need more #water. This puts more pressure on the water supply and sanitation systems. Investing in urban water infrastructure becomes a top priority for the sake of public #health and access to clean water. It includes water supplies for domestic and industrial use, wastewater disposal, and preventing pollution of water sources. The construction boom in #Uzbekistan’s capital, which is evidence of economic development and growing urbanization, is causing the city’s architectural appearance to change rapidly.
