Starting the day with a keynote! This time I had to honour to shed my light on recent evolutions in sustainable finance during a breakfast session on ‘Delivering Sustainability through ESG Compliance’ of Liedekerke . With the publication of the EU Action Plan on Sustainable Finance in 2018, we have arrived in a new era, of scope and speed. But although we have are leading the way in sustainability in the continent and our funds industry, there are still steps needed to be taken. For instance, there still seems to be a disconnect between investors and corporates where the respective expectations are not aligned yet. In my humble opinion, the real gamechanger will come with sustainable and climate litigation. A simple fact, but one that need close attention and a change in mindset. Thank you Liederkerke and Tom Van Dyck in particular for this invitation. It was a fascinating opportunity to share my thoughts on sustainable finance and the transformation of the economy towards more sustainable practices, to those present from our Belgian (legal) ecosystem today. Day 1 of the Sustainable Finance Summit organized by Finance Montréal. I find it interesting to hear how the finance ecosystem thinks about sustainability. There is a consensus behind the fact that we can achieve both positive financial returns AND a positive impact on the planet, its people and the environment. Harmonization and interoperability of taxonomy and disclosure rules and regulations is needed. It is encouraging to follow progress made in the adoption of -.or commitment to - the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)’s S1 and S2 in many jurisdictions accounting for 35% of total GDP. There are challenges to overcome such as greenwashing and more transparency, rigor and integrity are needed. On the opposite side of the spectrum there is a new greenhushing trend and we should pay attention to the risks of inaction. Yet, everyone agrees there is an urgency to act! Despite some concerns with recent pushbacks driven by local political agendas, there is a global momentum which is here to stay! Comforting to hear.
