It was a real privilege to contribute to the design of the National AI Strategy developed by Costa Rica 🇨🇷 . As a consultant for CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe- in 2023, I had the opportunity to assist in drafting this policy and provide key insights for developing the ethics and governance agenda. Main recommendations included focusing on AI incident identification and monitoring, as well as developing comprehensive and implementable ethical frameworks to ensure the safe use of technology. Additionally, regulatory sandboxes were proposed to support the development of a solid regulatory framework. Some of these ideas were also shared in the recommendations we proposed during the expert roundtable we organized with the Global Network of Centers in April 2024 (report available here: https://lnkd.in/emJ37UQf). It is gratifying to see many of these technical considerations included in the official document. Congratulations to the team at Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación, Tecnología y Telecomunicaciones de Costa Rica and the leadership of Vice Minister Orlando Vega. I'm excited to announce my recent appointment to the Open Data Strategy Council, a collaborative initiative uniting the Ministry of Interior and Safety, Ministry of Finance and Economy, Ministry of Science and ICT, Statistics Korea, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), the National Information Society Agency, and key representatives from the private sector to enhance the openness of public data. This new role aligns seamlessly with my ongoing contributions to the Presidential Digital Government Platform Committee, where I have been actively involved for over two years. In our meeting yesterday, we engaged in a thorough discussion on the 2024 National Key Data Strategy, with a focus on optimizing data utilization and improving quality assessments to advance Korea's open data initiatives. I emphasized the strategic significance of open data in reinforcing Korea's standing as a global leader within the OECD - OCDE. As we delve deeper into the AI era, the demand for accessible, high-quality data escalates, underpinning innovation and economic growth. It is particularly pertinent as we are also at a critical juncture as we await the passage of the AI bill in May. For the past four years, CODIT has been at the forefront, advising various government bodies on the effective utilization of public data and AI, providing crucial industry insights. Our objectives are in harmony with the council's mission, aiming to foster a data-rich environment that catalyzes AI advancements and technological innovation. I am excited about the dynamic synergy between my roles and the prospective impact on Korea's digital future.
