This article by the WSJ is critically important for public health officials and HealthTech entrepreneurs to internalize. We need multiple solutions for patients to move towards post GLP-1 usage. These solutions need to be easy to implement, non-disruptive to daily life and focused on caloric restriction , lifestyle change and muscle gain. Too many startups are still focused on GLP-1 prescription and delivery. Not enough people focused on the next stage of the weight management journey. As the Journal states, the benefits of the GLP-1 craze are only going to be successful long term if the transition off of them is successful. Otherwise, we risk unforeseen, long term consequences to a large group of patients stuck on GLP-1's with no healthy way to transition off. https://lnkd.in/dYBd3HaN Meghan FitzGerald James Stearns Dominic Perks John LaMattina Raju Kucherlapati

Great piece today in the WSJ by Betsy McKay. Weight maintenance is about behavior change. While digital approaches to weight *loss* without any therapeutic intervention have failed, digital solutions focused on behavior change for weight *maintenance* have shown promise. At IFSO-EC, Dr. Ienca and colleagues presented data from a 3-year weight loss survey of Allurion patients that showed 80% weight maintenance 3 years after the Allurion Balloon, with an even higher percentage in those patients who reported having made changes to their eating habits. I believe this data is very promising as it demonstrates how we can use periods of weight loss to drive behavior change that could lead to long-term weight maintenance. In fact, I believe weight loss is a misnomer. The holy grail is fat loss and weight maintenance.

Quinoa There are over 3,000 varieties of quinoa (2Trusted Source). However, the most widely grown types are red, black and white. There is also a tricolor variety, which is a mixture of all three. Quinoa can also be rolled into flakes or ground into flour, which can then be used for cooking and baking, the different types also have varying nutrient contents. A study examining red, black and white quinoa found that while black quinoa has the lowest fat content, it has the highest omega-3 fatty acid and carotenoid contents. Red and black quinoa also have nearly twice the vitamin E content of white quinoa. Just one cup (185 grams) of cooked quinoa is a great source of the following nutrients (4): Manganese: 58% of the RDI. (Recommended Daily Intake) Magnesium: 30% of the RDI. Phosphorous: 28% of the RDI. Folate: 19% of the RDI. Copper: 18% of the RDI. Iron: 15% of the RDI. Zinc: 13% of the RDI. Thiamin: 13% of the RDI. Riboflavin: 12% of the RDI. Vitamin B6: 11% of the RDI. Quinoa Contains Complete Proteins Quinoa is one of the few plant proteins that is a complete protein. This means it contains all of the essential amino acids you need. Quinoa’s high fibre and protein content may also contribute to its positive effects on blood sugar. However, it is a grain and is still relatively high in carbs (7Trusted Source). How to Eat QuinoaHere’s a list of some ways to enjoy quinoa: Mix with chopped vegetables, serve warm or cold. Season and serve as a side dish. Cook into breakfast cereal with bananas or blueberries. Mix with veggies and stuff into bell peppers. Add to chilli. Toss into a spinach or kale salad. Read more Healthline Media.com https://https://lnkd.in/g2UZxYA7

Great article about the next frontier in obesity: weight maintenance. By Betsy McKay in The Wall Street Journal today, featuring Fractyl Health patient journeys and our upcoming Remain-1 pivotal study for people who want to keep weight off after stopping GLP-1s. Key quotes: “Drugs or procedures to keep weight off could fuel an even bigger bonanza than Ozempic and its immensely profitable cousins." "Only 14% of people surveyed in 2023 by @KFF, the health-policy research organization, were interested in taking a weight-loss drug once they were told they might gain weight back if they stopped." https://lnkd.in/eWC3asi8

Lately, I have had repeated conversations about plant-based eating--pros and cons, how to incorporate more plant proteins and less animal-based proteins, and more. We often look for the ONE answer or solution, and my response is, "There isn't ONE." Plant-based eating offers many health and environmental benefits, such as reduced risk of chronic disease and carbon footprint. At the same time, animal-based eating offers many health benefits, and there are options to reduce carbon footprint by seeking more sustainable farming practices, such as Route 22 Meats. Both dietary lifestyles can support an endurance athlete's health and performance. If you're looking to boost your protein intake with more plant-based protein, read this article and share it with others. I am thankful to have the opportunity to contribute with Roxana Ehsani MS, RD, CSSD, LDN and Carrie Gabriel, MS, RDN in Peloton Interactive for Hillary Hoffower. This article is informative and offers fun new twists for incorporating higher-protein vegetables into your daily routine! https://lnkd.in/deMr7mvp
