After 7+ years of working with more than 35 Web3 projects on both full-time and freelance basis, I discovered that poor marketing isn't their primary cause of failure. On the contrary, many Web3 projects fail because they neglect their marketing teams. Before you crucify me, read further to understand my point of view. I spoke to many of my marketing friends, who confirmed that some founders see marketing as an afterthought. My personal experience isn't different either. I once worked with a Web3 startup that changed its direction so frequently that the marketing team had to plead to stay informed. “Could you please keep us in the loop with what you're building?” we asked. Despite our frequent requests, we were often sidelined, making it nearly impossible to understand what the technical teams were building. This raises an important question: How does your marketing team explain your project to the community when they hardly understand what you’re building? And that’s the heart of the problem. Some founders often underestimate the value of their marketing teams. They think marketing is just about posting tweets or running ads. But it's much deeper than that. Marketing is about communicating your vision clearly to the world. It's about storytelling. When your marketing team is out of the loop, the story gets lost. And when the story is unclear, the community loses interest. You can have the best product, but if your audience doesn’t understand it, it won’t matter. So, here's my advice: bring your marketing team to the table. Keep them informed from day one. They aren’t just promoting your project; they’re helping to build it. Does this sound at all familiar to you? You make a start on content marketing only to stop because you feel overwhelmed. Or you get momentum on a social media platform and then vanish and lose that momentum. Or perhaps you're the person who hasn't written a blog article or released a podcast since 2020. It has happened to all of us (me included). And it happens because content creation is hard work. And because business gets busy. My top mistake to avoid in your content plan... You need to appreciate that everyone consumes content differently. We all have different tastes and preferences, like the wonderful spicy individuals we are. A well-planned content strategy must consider this and create content using multiple channels, such as podcasts, videos, images, carousels, infographics, and written content. I love reading. I'm a bookworm, and a bit of text excites me. I find words comforting; I always have. Podcasts are next for me because of their sheer convenience and flexibility. They allow me to listen to my favourite episodes while on the school run, washing up, or even working. I love that I can pause and resume them anytime, making fitting them into my busy schedule easier. For me, it would be easy to base my whole content strategy on my preferences, but it would be a mistake for two reasons. 1) As I said earlier, we are all different 2) Apparently, I'm a bit odd as, statistically, videos tend to be the winners in terms of engagement According to recent research by HubSpot, 81% of marketers use video marketing tools, 78% of people watch online videos every week, and 55% watch them every day. So don't miss out on making content that your customers and potential customers connect with! All the podcast links you're pasting on LinkedIn and calling it "strategic marketing"—is it really working? Or those clockwork blogs you publish every month? Here’s the thing: if your content isn’t driving any kind of growth—awareness, engagement, or conversions—it’s not marketing; it’s just activity. But let’s face it, marketing isn’t a rulebook game. It’s trial and error. or hit and trial (that's what maths nerd call it) You experiment. You adapt. You find what sticks. Great marketing isn't predictable; it's iterative. It’s about testing bold ideas,measuring impact, and learning as you go. A podcast link might not land today, but maybe a snippet from it turned into a LinkedIn carousel will. A blog might flop this month but spark an email campaign next month. The takeaway? Stop treating marketing as a checklist and start treating it as a journey. Adjust. Pivot. Keep moving. As a service-based business if you want to reach clients with your content, posting on one platform is not enough❗️ One of the reasons is the huge amount of competition and the longer customer consideration phase when they decide whether they want to buy from you or not 🧐 So, posting only on one platform using short-form content is not enough. Your content strategy should be based on a content hierarchy from the longest to the shortest content form. This not only simplifies the content creation process for social media channels like Instagram and Threads, where you primarily use short-form content. But it also gives your clients an opportunity to study a specific topic you talk about in more detail in your blog or podcast. Therefore, I always recommend building a content hierarchy. Choose a format for your long-form content. It can be a blog article, a long podcast episode, or a long educational YouTube video. As everyone has their own strengths, choose the long-form content format that suits you best. If you are a good speaker, choose podcasts; if you are a good writer, choose blogging; if you are a good presenter, choose YouTube videos. Importantly, however, remember to stick to just one; otherwise, you stretch yourself thin and don’t succeed at any. Then, break down your long-form content piece into smaller content formats for other platforms. In the end, always tie your content to your service. If you don’t, it’s like working for free 💸 Following a content hierarchy gives your audience multiple opportunities to be reminded of your service, streamlines your content creation process, and ensures you stick to the topic.
