📚 Teaching Sex and Relationships Education: A Safeguarding Perspective 🛡️ Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is critical to safeguarding young people, yet many teachers find it challenging to deliver confidently and effectively. According to a 2022 survey by NASUWT and the NSPCC, 46% of teachers report lacking confidence when teaching this vital subject. This highlights the need for further support and resources to ensure the safe and effective delivery of SRE in our schools. The NSPCC Learning Podcast, featuring Childline ambassador Natalie Dormer, recently discussed the hurdles teachers face when addressing SRE and explored practical solutions. Effective SRE equips students with knowledge about healthy relationships, consent, and personal boundaries, all of which play a significant role in preventing abuse. For schools, taking a whole-school approach to teaching SRE is essential. This ensures that the curriculum is delivered in a way that is inclusive, age-appropriate, and aligned with safeguarding principles. By engaging with students openly and thoughtfully, schools can create a safe environment where difficult topics are discussed with sensitivity and care. #SRE #Safeguarding #TalkRelationships #NSPCC #SchoolSafety #SexEducation #PreventingAbuse https://lnkd.in/eh_J7VcW

Before starting extracurricular classes for children, it's important to spend some time teaching them about online safety. Similar to road safety, online safety is extremely important. Children start consuming digital content as early as 3 years old, if not earlier. Instead of complaining about the prevalence of technology in our lives, we need to take a proactive approach and educate them about online safety. 1. Help children understand the importance of keeping personal information private. 2. Help them recognize and promote safe websites. 3. Teach them how to handle cyberbullying. 4. Teach them about netiquette. 5. Explain the concept of digital footprint and its impact. Ensuring online safety is a collective effort that extends beyond the classroom. Educators should collaborate with parents and the broader school community to reinforce online safety practices at home and in school. There are missions focused on teaching waste management, sex education, and road safety. Soon, people should create missions to educate kids on digital literacy and how to be responsible online. How do you teach online safety to your kids? #practills #onlinesafety #digitalliteracy #proeducators #teacherstraining

Raising the profile of PSHE: PSHE and RSE: Essential, Not Optional. In today's ever-changing world, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) are not subjects that can simply be "added on" to the timetable as an afterthought. These are core areas of learning that shape the well-being, values, and futures of young people. To truly make a difference, PSHE and RSE need to be delivered by trained and confident teachers who are equipped not only with the knowledge, but also with the skills to create safe, supportive environments where students feel heard, respected, and empowered. The conversations around mental health, relationships, consent, diversity, and emotional well-being are vital—and they require educators who are passionate and prepared. The impact of quality PSHE and RSE lessons extends far beyond the classroom, fostering resilient, informed, and empathetic young people who are ready to navigate life’s challenges. It’s time to view PSHE and RSE for what they truly are: vital subjects that deserve the same level of commitment and professional development as any other area of the curriculum. Let's invest in our teachers and ensure they have the tools they need to guide the next generation effectively. #EducationMatters #PSHE #RSE #TeacherTraining #ProfessionalDevelopment #Wellbeing #EducationForAll

Last week the Governmnent/ IFF Research published a Research and Analysis paper ‘relationships, sex and health education: 2020 curriculum implementation’. A really interesting read that profiles how schools are embedding the curriculum within their settings. There’s still work to be done around the #pedagogy of #RSHE (a high % of staff lack confidence, feel a lack of training, and mention low student engagement). Surprising that there’s no mention of external surveys to support #curriculumdesign (NHS My Health My School or Local Authority equivalents (Brighton & Hove City Council Safe and Well at School)). On a complete positive, this research *DID* include KS5 and extended inclusion to 18. We need more of this! Read here:
