WASTE BETTER! #food #PlanToSave #SchoolMeals #environment Food waste is one key contributor to the looming global food crisis and it mainly stems from the consumers... We waste because we are not aware or knowledgeable on how to save better. We also waste because our financial and social situation affirms a future meal... but why garbage out perfectly viable farmer's sweat? Here is a few ways on how to plan that next meal while guaranteeing the next: 🎯 Pre plan your meals and adhere to the plan! Having a layout on what will be cooked: quantities, portions and number of consumers ensures that whatever is prepped is well consumed. This technique works well for individuals, families/communities eating together because with a pre made plan, each consumer looks forward to, or can communicate their non-participation and preparations adjusted accordingly. 🎯 Get creative! It doesn't take a culinary arts degree to confer ability to transform leftovers into yet another delicious meal. Fresh vegetables, ground spices and seeking recommended cooking techniques, rampant on social media, are your friends! Not forgetting the "Small Variables" technique that involves having small portions of a variety of foods to keep consumers well indulged while simultaneously ensuring that all gets eaten. 🎯 A little Psychology please. Our brains have the ability to communicate how we prefer our meals in terms of time, taste, presentation, company, location etc. When all the boxes are checked to our preferences, we tend to eat better. Organizing meal time to suit preferences can therefore make us more effective eaters and minimize wasting food away. 🎯 Involve the Children. Children are picky eaters, with limited sense of wastage unless taught. Those caring for children can teach them about wasting food through employing some of the above recommendations, in addition to reducing distractions during meal time, portion control and healthy rewards for a clean plate. 🎯 Farm The Leftovers. Leftovers can be transformed to food for domestic animals or composted to make organic manure. Have separate bins for leftover and for inedible food parts, to use for a small household project. 🎯 Science It Out. Yup, food can be preserved for later days through freezing, pickling, fermentation and dessication. Where there is plenty, don't fight to finish up, save for later. ⚠️ Such processes require expert guidance to ensure that the food is still safe for human consumption. Seek professional guidance. Together, with a lot of deligence and mindfulness, we can salvage future meals, for everyone.

These stats blow my mind - 60% of food waste happens at home 🤯 If we’re going to eliminate food waste, we have to start at home! Thanks to Elta Smith for shedding light on this issue and the many opportunities in her latest piece in “The Future of Food” newsletter (link in comments). “Tackling food waste is a shared responsibility and a triple-win: protecting our environment, helping to reduce hunger, and making our food system more effective and just.” Elta also alludes to why so much waste happens in households: • lack of meal planning skills or time constraints leading to insufficient advanced meal planning • impulse buys and overstocking fridges resulting in food spoiling before it can be used • lack of space to store food, making it difficult to identify what is already available • different meal preferences among family members, leading to excess food being prepared or unwanted leftovers • elevated expectations about how much we should eat (influenced by oversized servings in restaurants, ready meals, and recipes) • “use by” and “best before” date labels, creating confusion about food safety and leading many to toss out safe-to-eat food prematurely • supermarkets packaging fruit and vegetables in bulk, leading to discarded items at home She also suggests many interventions to address household food waste, for example: • Raising awareness through campaigns like "Love Food Hate Waste" by WRAP • Standardization of food labels, and companies like Mimica making this more accessible/intuitive • Supermarkets selling “imperfect” produce and selling more loose fruit and veg, as well as companies like Oddbox, Rubies In The Rubble, Too Good To Go • Mandatory food waste reporting and restricting multi-buy offers like buy-one-get-free that incentivize overconsumption • More ambitious food waste reduction targets set at a government level So, what are some of the best interventions and initiatives you’ve seen to tackle food waste?

In the US and Canada, more fast food is being consumed than ever. Thanks to spiking grocery costs and a lack of time for home cooking, food extremely high in sodium, processed fats, and artificial preservatives are now an almost daily part of life for many. Its presence in our culture is cemented after decades of highly effective marketing and casual consumption. However, fast food doesn't just threaten our health. The ingredients used in fast food, especially beef and chicken, take a severe toll on our climate due to their high emissions rate. Our food system now revolves around the needs of the fast food market, prioritizing the chemical-based preservation and long-haul trucking of ingredients instead of the localization of food sources. As this article describes, there's more than one reason to quit fast food. If you aren't worried about health effects, you might want to take into consideration its contribution to climate change. #FastFood #ClimateChange #Localization

𝑭𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆: 𝑺𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑩𝒊𝒈 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒕 Let's face it, food waste is a massive issue globally. In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, post-harvest losses are estimated to be worth $4 billion annually—enough to feed at least 48 million people (World Bank). Every year, a staggering amount of perfectly good food gets tossed aside. This not only impacts our wallets but also puts a strain on our environment. But hey, you can't afford to sit on the fence concerning food waste! We all have the power to make a difference. In this post, I'm sharing some practical strategies you can implement to become a food waste champion: 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒔 Before hitting the grocery store, take stock of what you already have and plan your meals for the week. This way, you'll buy only what you need and avoid impulse purchases. Think of it like a treasure hunt: can you create delicious meals with what you already have on hand? 𝑩𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒈𝒆 Knowledge is power! Understanding proper storage techniques is key. Did you know some fruits and veggies ripen faster when stored together? Keep leafy greens in the crisper drawer, and store potatoes in a cool, dark place. A quick online search can reveal the storage secrets for all your favourite foods. 𝑬𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 "𝑳𝒆𝒇𝒕𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆" Leftovers are not the enemy! Get creative and repurpose them into new dishes. Leftover chicken can become a stir-fry masterpiece, and roasted veggies can be transformed into a hearty soup. (𝘐 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘔𝘌𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘯𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘳𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴). There are endless possibilities! 𝑼𝒈𝒍𝒚 𝑫𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑼𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 Those imperfect-looking fruits and veggies at the store? They're just as delicious and nutritious as their "perfect" counterparts. Embrace the wonky shapes and save some money while reducing waste. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍 We've all been there—eyes bigger than our stomachs. Use smaller plates and bowls to avoid overserving yourself. Remember, you can always go back for seconds (if there are any leftovers!). These are just a few ways we can all make a positive impact. Distinguished professionals, In observance of International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, I would like to contribute to the global discourse on this critical issue. As a consumer, I believe that we all have a role to play in reducing food waste. Bun appétit! Let's dig in and enjoy! Let’s avoid all those complicated grammatical definitions and keep it as simple as we can. Shall we? Food loss occurs before food reaches consumers, often due to factors like spoilage during harvest or transportation. Food waste, on the other hand, happens after food is purchased but not consumed and as a result go bad. To drive home the points, Food loss is when an apple falls off the tree and gets ruined before reaching your home while food waste is when the apple goes bad at home because you forgot to eat. Nigeria, often referred to as the "Giant of Africa," is grappling with significant food insecurity, largely driven by high levels of food loss and waste. This issue poses serious challenges to food security, economic development, and environmental sustainability, making it a global concern. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 40-50% of total food production is lost or wasted each year. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Nigeria has emphasized that post-harvest losses are a major contributor to this wastage. (I could have focus on global issues, but as the saying goes, charity begins at home. LOL). Food waste and loss are interconnected issues that often lead to food insecurity. However, for this discussion, I will concentrate on food waste related to us; the final consumers. As James Beard aptly stated, "Food is our common ground, a universal experience." It is crucial for each of us to recognize our role in addressing this pressing challenge affecting our communities. The following in no particular order are several actions that can be taken to combat food loss: - Avoid purchasing excessive quantities of food, particularly perishable items. A good spending habit is key! - Review food labels to ensure that you do not purchase items close to their expiration dates. Read to digest information! - Maintain an updated inventory of your stock and consistently apply First In, First Out (FIFO) and First Expire, First Out (FEFO) practices. - Learn to utilize traditional indigenous methods for food preservation, as these techniques help retain freshness and promote healthiness. Be proactive! - Get creative with food by transforming ingredients into alternative forms and products. Variety is the spice of life! - Apply your knowledge in practice and share it with others to spread awareness and understanding. It is a continuous journey! Please feel free to add your contributions. Thanks

🫑 This fresh veg will stay fresh for several WEEKS.. What’s the secret?! Ok, i’m telling on myself here. I love a Lakeland catalogue! I’m not sure why, it just gives me a warm, cosy feeling I loved them even in my rocking twenties, so it’s not an age thing! I rarely actually buy anything, but this time I spotted something that made me go ooooh! They’re ‘Stayfresh Longer Bags', which promise to extend the life of vegetables and fruit by several WEEKS. Have you seen them? ❓ Apparently they work because of a natural Japanese stone powder that’s suspended in the polythene. The powder absorbs ageing ethylene gases that most fruit and veg release, creating an environment that helps produce stay fresher for far longer. I do pretty ok on not wasting food, but inevitably there’s something that slips through the net. Tends to happen on an exceptionally busy week, or when it’s an unusual vegetable that’s arrived in my Riverford delivery that takes a bit more effort to cook and gets postponed and postponed.... But Project Drawdown rates food waste as one of the TOP two actions we can take as individuals (the other being eating more plant-rich). And WRAP estimates that households are responsible for 70% of the UK's food waste. So if I nail it completely, I'd be well chuffed. The bags are polythene. But given that they’re reusable, you just wash and dry them and use again, I thought on balance that they were a win. This by the way is the sort of detail we give people in our Couch To Carbon Sprint and Lunch & Learns. Everyone knows the headlines, but the devil is always in the detail. Where to go, what to get, the best apps, the hacks, HOW to do something. THAT’S what makes it easy for everyone to follow through. And actually DO stuff. And a lot of these save money too. The bags are £7.49 for 20. I reckon a few limp carrots and cucumbers in, I’ll have made that back. Here’s the link if you fancy checking them out - https://lnkd.in/e_W7U9vm Let me know what you think! I will too. _________________________________________________________ I'm co-founder of Couch to Carbon Zero. We make smart climate action easy for busy people.
