How AI can accelerate drug discovery Drug discovery is a complex and costly process that involves multiple stages, from identifying potential targets to conducting clinical trials. As per insights from Harvard, AI is reshaping the landscape, revolutionizing every stage of this process. Discover how AI accelerates innovation, making the industry swifter and more economical. Target identification: At this phase of drug discovery, AI is being trained on vast datasets, including omics datasets, phenotypic and expression data, disease associations, patents, publications, clinical trials, research grants, and more to understand the biological mechanisms of diseases and to identify novel proteins or genes that can be targeted to counteract those diseases. Molecular simulations: AI minimizes the need for physical testing of candidate drug compounds by enabling high-fidelity molecular simulations that can be run entirely on computers (i.e., in silico) without incurring the prohibitive costs of traditional chemistry methods. Forecasting Drug Properties: Some AI systems are used to predict important properties such as toxicity, bioactivity, and physicochemical characteristics of molecules to avoid simulated drug candidate testing. Drug Design: While traditional drug discovery has historically involved the screening of large libraries of candidate molecules, AI is shifting this paradigm too. Some systems can now generate new and effective drug molecules from the beginning.
