Sweden’s first and one of Europe’s first onshore power supply for cruise ships have passed an important milestone through test calls with ships in central Stockholm. Over 35 cruise ships are expected to connect by October this year. Ports of Stockholm is now entering the final phase of the innovative project to install two onshore power facilities for cruise ships at Stadsgården quays in Stockholm. The shipping company AIDA, which is by far Ports of Stockholm’s largest cruise customer, participated with the cruise ship AIDAdiva in the first test call, which took place on May 30. The facilities have been under construction for the past two years and will reduce emissions from cruise ships in port and reduce noise from the engines. By connecting a ship to the electricity grid, it can turn off its diesel generators and use onshore power instead, greatly reducing carbon dioxide emissions, air pollution, and noise. Rolls-Royce has signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Singapore to further strengthen its partnership with Majestic Fast Ferry Pte Ltd in enabling clean, energy-efficient sailings for its current fleet of 11 ferries, fitted with mtu propulsion systems. The event also commemorated the ferry operator’s 100th mtu engine purchased since 2016 from Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia, a subsidiary of the Power Systems division of Rolls-Royce. Majestic Fast Ferry uses mtu Series 2000 engines, with the 100th unit being the 16V 2000 M72 with a power output of 1,440 kW. FERRIES & CRUISES: Vessev launches world’s first electric #hydrofoiling passenger vessel Vessev has launched what it claims to be the first fully electric hydrofoiling vessel for passenger transportation to operate in Auckland and the first hydrofoiling tourism vessel to operate in the world. Eric Laakmann, CEO of Vessev, explained, “To put it into perspective, the VS-9 is undergoing on-water testing with a petrol-powered chase boat following, doing the same motions and distance. At the end of each day, the cost of the petrol fueling the chase boat is 25 times the cost of the electricity used to charge the VS-9.” Mike Horne, CEO of Fullers360, said, “It’s our intention for Fullers360 to be 100% electric or hydrogen operated by 2040 and foiling is absolutely a part of that vision for us. The Carnival Corporation & plc owned cruise line is using a Corvis Energy battery. The 10 megawatt-hour battery consists of 1,800 modules. Due to it’s size, AIDA had to remove one of the unused water tanks on the ship, AIDAperla, the 125,000 gross ton vessel being powered by electricity. The installation of the 10,000 kWh lithium-ion battery system was the first to be used on a large cruise ship like this. AIDAperla carries over 4,000 guests and is 984 feet in length. At the time of the battery’s installation, the Chief Commercial Officer of Corvis, Halvard Hauso, said, “This will be the world’s biggest battery installation on board a ship to date. The project shows it is possible to retrofit even quite large energy storage solutions on board cruise and passenger ships. It is however challenging to find enough available space as the volume of the batteries is quite substantial. For a new building this is much easier as you can plan it from the design phase.” And 10 megawatt-hours is just the beginning. #sustainability #alternativeenergy

ALTERNATIVE FUELS: Stena RoRo orders two multi-fuel passenger vessels Stena RoRo has ordered another two E-Flexer ro-pax vessels from the Chinese shipyard CMI Jinling (Weihai). The vessels will be delivered in 2027 to the Greek shipping company Attica Group and will operate in the Adriatic Sea. Panos Dikaios, CEO of Attica Group, commented, "Our agreement with Stena RoRo for the charter of two new state-of-the-art vessels sets new standards for the entire Greek #ferry industry." Per Westling, CEO of Stena RoRo, stated, "The E-Flexer vessels for Attica have been jointly designed and ordered as the most bespoke E-Flexers so far." The “CERULEAN ACE” marks a significant milestone for MOL, as it is the first of 11 LNG-fueled car carriers to be constructed in Japan under the “BLUE” series.
