Blast from the past! Thanks to DERC for inviting me to give a keynote address at their conference in 2017. Great to know that it was in the top ten of their most viewed videos. I think if I were asked to give the address again, I would revise some of what I said but I think my three main points are still valid: 1. GCE is of relevance for various sub-disciplines within political science (and indeed other fields in the social sciences) ; 2. research on GCE needs to be inter, post and trans-disciplinary and I welcome those kinds of partnerships; 3. Researchers of GCE either as practitioners or those researching GCE from any other discipline within the social sciences need to pay close attention to the methodologies they use and their epistemological assumptions.

Call for contributions to an edited book - Human life after contact with extraterrestrial civilisations 📘 🌌 How will humanity react to contact with an alien civilisation? How would different types of contact affect us? How would humans live with such a new reality? Contact, or even life with another intelligent species, would have ramifications into all areas of human life, such as, for example politics and governance, defence, law, religion, philosophy, sociology, psychology, communication and linguistics, arts and literature, and technology, to name but a few. The editors Michael Bohlander, Andreas Anton and John Elliott invite contributions from an academic perspective, with a strong comparative and above all decolonising emphasis. Too many of the publications in the broader field of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) come from a Eurocentric and generally Western background. Contributions from the global South and Asia are strongly encouraged. 🌍 Excited to announce the publication of our Special Issue, "The Social and Sociological Province of Climate Change," in the International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society (Volume 37, Issue 4, December 2024)! As Guest Editors, José Maurício Domingues and I brought together leading scholars to explore the critical intersection of sociology and climate change. This special issue emerged from a rich academic dialogue between Brazilian and German scholars at the Institute for Latin American Studies of the Freie Universität Berlin (LAI-FU Berlin).
