Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Guide for Electric Utilities Power Sector 1.5 Celsius Guidance for the power sector A sustainable energy system is at the heart of the low-carbon transition. A significant and growing segment of final energy consumption is met by purchased electricity – therefore, efficiency improvements in electricity generation will benefit the power sector and cascade down the value chain. How to set a target Our pathway for the power sector enables electric utilities to set science-based targets in line with limiting warming to 1.5°C. “Australia has plenty of flat terrain and we have the best infrastructure – railways and highways,” said the Hong Kong-based private equity veteran. “The beauty of hydrogen is that it can be reshaped into downstream products needed by different industries.” Hydrogen, a highly flammable gas with a low energy density, is difficult and expensive to transport over long distances. This can be addressed by processing it into easy-to-transport products such as methanol and ammonia that are being piloted in ships and power plants. Hydro X has been exploring with Hong Kong utilities CLP Group and Towngas the feasibility of deploying its technology on transporting the gas to help them with their decarbonisation. During the 15th Clean Energy Ministerial held last week in Brazil, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) launched a new report entitled “Global trade in green hydrogen derivatives”. I had the privilege of co-authoring this publication together with my colleagues James Walker, Arno van den Bos, Karan Kochhar, and Deepti Siddhanti under the guidance of Francisco Boshell; Luis Janeiro; and Roland Roesch. 🌡️ In pursuit of a 1.5 Scenario, IRENA World Energy Transition Outlook finds that many end use sectors will need to be electrified to reduce global emissions as well as total final energy consumption. However, for certain “hard to abate sectors” other approaches beyond electrification will be required to achieve effective decarbonisation. 📄 Several of IRENA’s analysis suggests that #green #hydrogen - i.e. hydrogen produced using electrolysis, powered from renewable sources will be a key enabler for global decarbonisation and flexibility of the power system. Most of the hydrogen produced today still originates from fossil fuel sources. For green hydrogen to become a driver towards achieving a net zero scenario by 2050, global electrolysis capacity would need to reach 5700 GW from a negligible capacity base today. 💡 The utilisation of green hydrogen as a common feedstock in the production of key industrial derivatives namely #methanol, #ammonia and #steel will be essential for achieving end use decarbonisation. In achieving this goal it is essential and imperative that these derivative products can be certified and verified as being “low emissions”. 🔍 The objective of this report is to present the available and upcoming #standardization and #certification schemes for these derivatives. 🏛️ This report also aims to provide insights into the interactions and links between the certification schemes and #regulatory frameworks developed for green hydrogen and its derivatives within first mover markets. The Federal and Western Australian governments have announced an investment of A$140 million ($92 million) to build a hydrogen hub in Pilbara, Western Australia, which will produce 492,000 tons of green H2 per year. The hub will become a major center for the production and export of hydrogen and could potentially become an "international gateway" for the production of green steel and pig iron.
