If your marketing efforts aren’t yielding ROI, it’s time to zoom out for holistic assessment. Here’s a small case study for you: I’m working with a new B2B client on marketing strategy and content. This is an amazing business, shining in every regard except marketing (which is why they brought me on). They thought their SEO game was slipping because their content efforts weren’t up to par. They wanted X articles per month and guest posts for backlinks and PR, etc. Maybe this would help the slump in sales, they thought. Not so fast. The deeper I dug, the more issues I found. ISSUE #1 – MARKETING TECH FAILS The backend of their website was a complete mess, which impacted everything from SEO to basic marketing functionality, to onboarding new sales leads. Even the CTA button was broken, effectively cutting off their sales pipeline. ISSUE #2 – ABSTRACT BUYER PERSONAS This company is very close to its clients, but the agency that was in charge of content before I came onboard knew absolutely nothing about the industry or the target audience. Everything they published was boring and straight out of ChatGPT. Why didn’t this agency take the time to interview the company’s clients and actually learn about the target audience? This is a foundational component that most marketers overlook. ISSUE #3 – WEAK DIGITAL PRESENCE Where was the multichannel content distribution? Nobody in the core leadership team was playing on the social channels where their target audience was hanging out. Any new content was seldom if ever distributed, which is just as well if the content sucks. Video/imagery also left a lot to be desired. ISSUE #4 – HALF-BAKED EMAIL MARKETING This company had 2000+ email contacts – but the list was cold. They weren’t doing anything with it. ISSUE #5 – MISSED STORYTELLING OPPORTUNITIES This is where everything comes together. The story behind this company, how they developed, how they serve their clients, and the innovations they’ve made in their industry is inspiring. Their service-oriented approach is refreshing, and their product adds incredible value to their B2B clients, solving significant challenges and headaches. A paid article placement here and a conference booth there with some keyword-driven articles in between will never be enough to move the needle. You can have the most amazing team and product ever – but without a solid, well-informed story-driven gameplan on how to get the right message to the right audience -- and then driving that audience through a measurable pipeline, you’ll never realize your true potential as a business. THE LESSON: Don’t let “best practices” in marketing derail you from actually connecting with and building a strategy around you target audience. PS: Fortunately, I have buy-in from the leadership.
