Infrastructure isn’t simple but it is often overlooked.

Many utility scale BESS facilities are close coupled to the substation yard. Strategically locating perimeter fence grounding in the BESS yard can mitigate hazardous transfer voltages while minimizing costs of grounding the entire fence length.

NC #Helene Update: As of 4:00 PM today, more than 1.3 million @Duke Energy Corporation #NC customers have seen their power restored since Helene hit. Around 141,000 customers are still without power in the mountain region. The vast majority of these customers live in areas where catastrophic damage exists – homes can’t receive power, total grid infrastructure damage has occurred and lack of access exists. We’re working closely with our state and federal partners to address these as quickly as possible. In many counties, we are focused on rebuilding the backbone of electrical infrastructure that was damaged by high winds and significant flooding. This work includes installing new transformers, main power lines and the infrastructure needed to provide power to customers when they can receive service.

To objectively summarize this statement from NC's primary private electric utility: Duke has achieved 90% restoration of power to affected customers, and the remaining 10% will be a major undertaking due to the catastrophic, complete, and unavoidable, loss of infrastructure. I imagine it includes everything: transmission lines, substations, and distribution, as well as direct lines to individual customers who are metered well off in distance to distribution poles.

The Town of Hull, Massachusetts, is prone to fierce winter weather conditions. Annually, the town experiences several power outages, resulting in approximately 160 hours of no electricity. In 2020, the town decided to work with Milton CAT to put a power plan in place, developing, configuring, and installing five XQ2000 generators sets in Winter months. Producing a combined 10MW of power, a sixth genset was added this year to meet the town’s peak load. What was the result? Since installation, only 3 hours of power outage has been experienced! Most of the district is now without power. Small pockets have power, including areas near the power station and inland areas, but most people do not have power. I have texted with the power company representative and they are aware of the situation. My past experience is that most people are back online within 48 hours. Many trees are down and so some roads are impassible. Please remember to stay safe and not take unnecessary risks with cleanup. Unfortunately, most personal injury from here on out will result from poor decisions rather than unavoidable impact. Persons who are not skilled and experienced with generators or electricity should not attempt dangerous tasks.
