NEWS: ‘We need to get started now’: Search for backup water storage, supply for Potomac River funded. "Almost six years after WTOP reported D.C. only has a one or two-day supply of drinking water if the #PotomacRiver weren’t available, a study to find potential water storage or another drinking water source will soon begin. The Energy and Water Appropriations Bill approved by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden last week contains $500,000 in funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin a study on potential solutions." 🚧 Dodgy But Stable: The Whaley Bridge Dam 🚧 In 2019, the Whaley Bridge Dam made headlines when it faced a potential collapse due to heavy rainfall. But despite its shaky state, the dam has been deemed "dodgy but stable" by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. 🏞️ 🔍 Key Points: The dam, built in the 19th century, suffered severe damage, prompting an emergency evacuation of the town. Emergency services worked tirelessly to stabilize the structure and prevent a catastrophic failure. The incident highlighted the importance of maintaining aging infrastructure and the challenges of managing such crises. 💡 Why It Matters: The Whaley Bridge Dam serves as a critical reminder of the need for vigilant infrastructure maintenance and the potential risks posed by aging structures in the face of extreme weather. 🔗 Read the full story here https://lnkd.in/espZJbRj #Infrastructure #Engineering #CivilEngineering #DamSafety #Construction

🚨 Rapidan Dam Faces Urgent Challenge Amid Midwest Flooding The historic Rapidan Dam near Mankato, Minnesota, recently faced a critical test as intense flooding from the Blue Earth River threatened its structural integrity. Originally constructed in 1910, this hollow concrete dam has weathered numerous challenges but is now showing significant signs of wear and vulnerability. Key Technical Insights: Partial Failure: The west abutment partially gave way due to debris and extreme water pressure, causing serious concerns about the dam's stability. Structural Assessments: A 2019 AP investigation highlighted the dam's fair condition, but recent severe weather and floods have exacerbated its state of disrepair. Environmental Risks: The dam's upstream reservoir holds over a century of sediment, posing potential ecological risks if released. Emergency Response: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission are actively assessing the damage and ongoing risks. This event underscores the urgent need for proactive infrastructure maintenance, safety assessments, and potential retrofitting to mitigate risks associated with aging dams. As climate conditions grow increasingly unpredictable, the importance of robust and well-maintained infrastructure cannot be overstated. #CivilEngineering #Infrastructure #DamSafety #FloodManagement #Engineering

Yesterday, the House passed the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) which would improve and strengthen our nation’s ports and harbors, inland waterway navigation, flood and storm protection, and other aspects of our water resources infrastructure. IME and our members are proud to play an important role in the implementation of many of these critical infrastructure projects through the safe and secure use of commercial explosives for the extraction of aggregate materials used in construction, removal of old structures, and preparing areas for new construction.
