Department of Transportation’s FLOW platform deepens supply chain data pool: Published information now covers inland freight hubs like rail terminals and warehouses to help users mitigate logistics challenges. The Freight Logistics Optimisations Works platform has published additional types of data for a more enhanced view of container import volumes and traffic, the Department of Transportation said in a press release earlier in the week. Published data now covers inland freight hubs, including rail terminal and warehouse end destinations, helping users make informed capacity decisions to avoid delays and other supply chain challenges. These participants share inbound containerised freight data, beginning with import purchase orders, and the federal platform aligns future demand volumes against current regional capacity to move ocean containers. The simple answer is yes and no. In principle the 70 percent of addressable owners that own less than 15 vessels globally very often do not have the knowledge, infrastructure or funds to invest in digital transformation right now. However, size also here doesnt necessarily matter as it makes evaluation and decision processes quite often very slow. A small or medium size company where C Level understands the necessity and opportunities arising from allocation of resources can nimbly verify, adapt and implement quickly and as such gain competitive advantage. Probably human resources have to be brought in or outsourced but such service providers are emerging in both the mature service provider and startup world constantly. It is just about to get going and set small, measurable and also achievable targets to justify the efforts.

I have to believe this is much welcomed news to transportation stakeholders. Supply chain visibility is becoming more important than ever. The ability to make cargo decisions prior to container arrival should allow ports to handle demand spikes long term while also handle regular volumes during non peak.
