Don't stay in Kolkata if you are trying to make a career in media and entertainment! I was offered a job at a small company in Kolkata after my post-graduation at a paltry Rs. 8000 per month. Mind you, I was supposed to work full time (for 8 hours), travel daily to work, and manage my expenses in a metro city. Although it isn't that costly as a city and you can barely make ends meet with that salary, I felt, it was extortion. Now, I was a fresher and never really worked anywhere full-time. Funnily enough, I was earning more money working part-time, taking up writing gigs every month. But, I wanted to get hired by an organization and rise the ranks like people do after college. So, I looked for some more opportunities. To my surprise, none of them agreed to pay more than Rs. 15k for a fresher like me. 10 years later, even today, things aren't very different for Kolkata. The entry-level salaries are still low. The ecosystem of work is extremely slow and not many new avenues have opened up when it comes to the media space in the city. Students find it difficult to figure out what should they be doing in the city after their post-graduation degrees. And those who can, migrate to cities like Pune, Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. I ended up with Mumbai. Landed a job that was paying Rs. 35,000 to begin with. The number looked a lot, but Mumbai sucked everything in. But, the city opened up new opportunities. - It showed other areas I could develop myself. - It allowed me to work with amazing mentors who helped in shaping my ideas. - I met with the most disciplined people in the business. Most importantly, it taught me, what shedding your comfort zone can bring to your life. After spending 7 years in Kolkata, I moved to Mumbai. Only to end up spending 8 years there. Now, it's time for the next chapter. Delhi it is.

After nearly 24 years in academics in higher education in management in India and abroad, I found myself facing the challenge of choosing the most suitable position as my next career move. The decision-making process was complex, with each opportunity offering unique advantages and trade-offs. One opportunity in senior academic and leadership roles from a nationally known business school, owned and managed by a reputable industrial conglomerate, offered a competitive salary with additional social security benefits and basic furnished campus accommodation. However, it was located far from my home town of Kolkata, at the most remote location of Southern part of India and not accessible easily and had a conservative leave and vacation policy. Another opportunity from an university group in northeast India provided the highest remuneration, a leadership role, and good connectivity to Kolkata. However, no accomodation is provided. Like the first offer, it also had a conservative leave policy, presenting a trade-off between salary and location convenience. The most recent opportunity from a university owned by a well-known media house in Central India offered a liberal leave policy and fully furnished family accommodation on campus. While the salary was lower than the second offer, it provided a progressive leave opportunity. However, the location was not easily accessible from Kolkata. After careful consideration, I made a decision and recently joined one of these institutions. The journey of navigating through these opportunities served as a valuable case study in decision-making, especially for management and HR students. Each option presented a unique blend of benefits and challenges, highlighting the importance of weighing priorities and values in professional choices.

📝 Why Keeping Your CV Updated is Crucial for Your Career! 📝 Yesterday, during a recruitment process, I came across a CV that initially raised a red flag. The candidate had listed Kolkata as their location, while we were looking for someone based in Madhya Pradesh. Based on this, I almost decided not to move forward, assuming the location mismatch would be a dealbreaker. However, something made me pause. I decided to call the candidate just to clarify. To my surprise, the candidate was actually in Indore and seeking opportunities there. The location on the CV was not updated. Had I not made that extra effort to call, this candidate could have easily missed out on a great opportunity—just because of an inaccurate detail in their CV. Thankfully, today, this candidate has been shortlisted for the next round! 🎉 This experience reinforced the importance of keeping your CV updated. Even small mistakes can prevent you from being considered for a role you’re perfect for. Key Takeaways for a Winning CV: 🔑 Location Accuracy: Always ensure your location reflects where you’re currently based or the location you’re seeking employment in. An outdated or incorrect location can cost you an opportunity. 🔑Current Contact Information: Ensure your email and phone number are up-to-date. If you’ve changed your number or email, don’t forget to update it on your CV! 🔑Relevant Experience: Keep your work experience current and tailor it to the roles you're applying for. Highlight your most recent achievements and skills. 🔑Skills and Certifications: Make sure your CV reflects the latest skills and certifications you've earned. If you've completed any new courses or training, add them! 🔑Professional Summary: Regularly refresh your personal statement or professional summary to align with your current career goals and aspirations. Your CV is a reflection of you. A small mistake, like listing the wrong location, can cause you to miss out on valuable opportunities. Always keep your documents updated to ensure you never lose a chance due to avoidable errors! #CareerTips #CVUpdate #JobSearch #Recruitment #ProfessionalGrowth #JobOpportunities #Hiring

I spent the early years of my childhood in a small town, a world I knew intimately. When I was 10, my family moved to Kolkata. It was the first time I experienced the busy life of a big city. This change opened up new opportunities for me, leading to my schooling, graduation, and tough training to become a Chartered Accountant. I still recall receiving a stipend of just Rs 1,000 per month during my CA training, where we toiled for countless hours. Yet, there was a deep sense of satisfaction, as we were surrounded by incredibly smart individuals who were much further along in their careers. We absorbed knowledge and wisdom that might have taken years to acquire under different circumstances. Similarly, my time at IIM Lucknow was transformative, significantly boosting my confidence. Interacting with some of the brightest minds from across the country and later embarking on my first job in Chennai opened up new perspectives and possibilities. These experiences taught me a valuable lesson: being surrounded by smarter people consistently leads to better outcomes. It wasn’t just about gaining knowledge or skills—it was about the collective growth that comes from being in the right company. At SalarySe, we embody this lesson. As a founder, one of my top priorities is to seek out and bring together individuals who are not just skilled but also smarter and more ambitious. I believe that being in a room with such people, even if it brings a bit of discomfort, is crucial for both personal growth and the growth of the organization. We’ve witnessed firsthand that when smart people collaborate, the results are truly exceptional. Get exclusive early access and be the first to discover what we're building!
