Recently, I was talking to a course creator who had a few homerun successes selling their content. The problem was, they didn't know why those successful courses worked while other titles in their library barely registered as a blip on the sales dashboard. I've reviewed hundreds of courses and found that the most successful ones all share common features. For example, successful courses promise to help learners achieve a TANGIBLE SKILL that is TIMEBOUND. It isn't just about knowledge transfer. I'm far more attracted to a course called "Write Your Book in 30 Days" than one called "Become a Novelist." Successful courses trim all the fat from their learning objectives. And these learning objectives are often unstated, yet still excite learners and incentivize them toward self-study. If you take a class called "How to Dance," chances are you're more interested in picking up a few moves to not embarrass yourself on the dance floor next weekend, rather than hearing the history of tail-shaking throughout the ages. Consider why learners would your course and what they'd actually want out of it. Another factor involves how successful courses are marketed. I'm definitely guilty of falling short here. I created a world-class course that gets employees to create personal intervention strategies that will defuse conflict at the source. Know what I called it? "Inspiring Bystander Intervention...." Those who bought it were evangelical about its success, but what slice of the corporate pie is searching for those specific terms? Even though our clients walked away with a tangible skill, prospective customers have no idea if it will help them - and are then forced to take a leap of faith. We got lucky, but luck is inconsistent. The other factors are too numerous to mention here, but I'm offering to review your curricula and match it against these parameters to help make it a success.
