Here are the 3 most underrated qualities of great teachers Empathy - Teachers often have to interact with children from all walks of life. As a teacher, it is crucial to be empathetic rather than make assumptions when children perform poorly, lash out or feel down. Making an effort to understand the root issue can make the biggest difference. Approachability - This trait helps build trust between the teacher and the students, helping students feel more comfortable with their teachers. When students share their academic and personal concerns, teachers can better understand what they can do to help elevate their students, making approachability a key trait for a safe learning environment. Love for learning - A seemingly ironic trait, the love for learning is an incredibly important trait in teachers. Teachers who constantly continue to learn more and are curious about their subject are not only able to give up-to-date information to their students, but also pass on that love for learning to them. It is teachers like these that can change the course of a student’s academic life. Traits like these differentiate between a good teacher and a great teacher. Love to see Lessonspace in action. Especially with teachers using words like "the students are so engaged" (I even caught a glimpse of fireworks 🎆!) It's inspiring to see the efficacy of high-dosage tutoring. This isn't new, we've known it's power for some time. (See my article from 2016 referencing Blooms 2 Sigma Problem from 1984 as a start, if more interested - https://lnkd.in/d7uqQCSX) But it's especially encouraging to see school districts affording it the budget and working with great organizations like Ignite Reading who provide the most important piece of the puzzle: the teacher! A trained and supported tutor in this high-dosage format has the ability to not only engage and move a students academics forward, but take a big load off the often-at-capacity classroom teacher.

I bought this sticker with all the special education professionals in mind. The job is hard and requires some patience, skills, and fortitude. As special education professionals, we have seen just about everything. Nothing surprises us and scared ain’t even in our vocabulary! We have a unique superpower that only another special educator can understand. The EdWeek State of Teaching survey, which polled a nationally representative sample of nearly 1,500 teachers in October 2023, found that teachers with three to nine years of classroom experience have worse morale than their peers who have either more or less experience. They are also less likely than teachers in other stages of their careers to say they’d recommend their own children, or those of a loved one, pursue a career in teaching.
