Our latest report: Towards High Quality in Australian Educational Technology To leverage the benefits of edtech for student learning, tools need to be well designed, effectively used, and appropriately governed, but in a rapidly growing sea of applications, how will we know when that is the case? This report outlines how edtech increasingly is the mediating layer between curriculum and the classroom, highlighting the need for a national quality assurance process for educational technology (edtech) used in Australian classrooms. Key Takeaways: ◼ Clear criteria should underpin a robust and transparent quality assessment process. ◼ At a minimum, the criteria should assure curriculum depth, coherence and fidelity; evidence-backed pedagogy and support for quality teacher use; inclusivity, and safe and ethical use of data (including disclosure of AI use and source). ◼ Australia has strong foundations to build on and we can learn from international approaches. Digital resources which support all students to access and succeed in curriculum-aligned learning should be the priority for this quality assurance process, with teachers playing a central role to help develop criteria and assess resources. "AI in Higher Education | Impact, Potential, Risks | Future of Learning & Teaching | EdTech Pedagogy".. in this video essay analysis, I investigate the impact of AI tools from a pedagogical perspective. How is Artificial Intelligence reshaping the very foundation of higher education? What is the impact of Artificial Intelligence on learning and teaching? These questions become critical as we navigate the transformative power of AI tools in academia. What happens when AI-driven content is everywhere? Do students swap active learning for passive scrolling? When convenience suppresses creativity, are we trading depth for speed? In an era where we can leverage AI for personalised learning experiences, we must also ask ourselves: Can we risk affecting authentic human creativity by over-relying on AI? Can the widespread use of AI academic aids, such as automated writing evaluation tools or personalised e-tutors, inadvertently discourage students from collaborative learning experiences? Beyond just the efficiency of algorithms, what about the depth of human thought, art, and culture? How do AI tools fare when confronted with the nuances of human expression? Can AI tools carry biases? As we embrace the technological advancements of AI, it's crucial to check the datasets and training mechanisms behind them. And as AI is integrated into the educational environment, what about overreliance on these tools? Can it become a trap, lulling us into passive consumption and stifling the very creativity we aim to nurture? https://lnkd.in/ez8Ph8uY #ArtificialIntelligence #education #school #college #students #aieducation #aiethics #HigherEducation #FutureOfEducation #AIEducation #EdTech #LearningTechnology #AIPedagogy #DigitalLearning #educational #EducationalRevolution #CollaborativeLearning #CriticalThinking #EducationTransformation #AIandCreativity #TechInTeaching #AIfuture #LearningTools #DigitalClassroom #AIResearch Swansea University School of Management, Swansea University #ModernEducation #EducationTrends #criticalthinkingskills

EDUCAUSE recently published the Teaching and Learning 2024 Horizon Report. Filled with lots of great content, I was pleased to see AI considered in relation to the holistic context of higher education but also discussed in its own "trend" section, as we have many challenges that have little (at least in the short run) to do with artificial intelligence. I was particularly excited to review the section on equitable and inclusive learning, which includes actions for individuals and organizations with the potential to impact students both directly and indirectly. Were there any surprises for you in this year's report? Anything you were excited to see, or would like more of? #HigherEducation #HigherEd #HigherEdIT #DEI #TechnologyTrends #technology #IT #colleges #universities https://lnkd.in/ebpahVfm

No one learns using one method. It’s stating the obvious yet much of the zero sum debate in education might make you think otherwise! In particular, the arguments around edtech persist. Is it just a tool? Is it a substitute for teacher-led learning? Can it be a distraction? Or is it the key to unlocking equality? The answer must be - it’s all of this. And more. Different approaches are complementary and the sum is greater than the individual parts. We need the human, the physical as well as the machine and the virtual. If AI is growing its superpowers from multiple sources, then humans must too. Last week Little Bridge celebrated a continuing collaboration with Ceibal en Inglés (@ceibaleningles) in Uruguay. This project is all about digital transformation. Nonetheless, the photo below shows just what else is going on in the classroom, alongside the use of devices. I love it! It’s a physical representation, made by the students, of the imaginary town that is at the center of our digital platform. I recently read a report from Harvard University Graduate School of Education called ‘Big Picture Thinking: How to educate the whole person for an interconnected world’ (link in comments). ‘In today’s world, education is no longer just about teaching students something but about helping them develop a reliable compass and the tools to confidently navigate through an increasingly complex, volatile and uncertain world. Success in education today is about identity, it is about agency and it is about purpose. It is about building curiosity – opening minds. It is about compassion – opening hearts. And it is about courage – mobilising our cognitive, social and emotional resources to take action’. I can’t imagine how we can achieve this eqitably without technology. And find it hard to believe that anyone would argue against this. However, I’m open to learning though if you have a different point of view! 😄 #edtech #wholepersonlearning

New Book “The Theory of Educational Technology”: "...Wegerif said: “We often forget that things we take for granted in education – like books and desks – are themselves technology that once challenged us to think differently. I find it extraordinary that so much discussion about new technology is defined by negativity and neglect. We complain that young people are glued to screens rather than talking to each other, but they are talking, through those devices. Arguably, they are moving towards a possible future where instead of just conversing with our neighbours we might understand a wider mix of people. We need to think more about how technology is changing the nature of dialogue and what it means to be; and what that means for how we learn.” Entangled History: The book discusses the intertwined history of education and technology, emphasizing that they have always been connected and should be considered together at a theoretical level. AI in Education: It addresses the debate around AI’s role in education, recognizing its potential to transform learning while also acknowledging concerns about misinformation and reduced learning opportunities. Future of Learning: The authors envision a future where education occurs through global online communities of inquiry, supported by AI ‘partners’, fostering collective identities and understanding among students. Educational Design: The book advocates for an ‘educational design-based research’ approach, where educators, communities, and academics collaboratively design and refine the integration of technology in education. The book raises critical questions about how technology can shape the nature of dialogue and learning, and how educators can effectively harness technological advancements to meet global challenges. https://lnkd.in/gQ4vaxVU

In a recent discussion between Bill Gates and Sal Khan, they highlighted the importance of social matters, learner agency, and alternative assessment abilities that can be extracted using tools like Khan Academy. Students using such tools can provide key information to shape lessons. Despite the focus on data extraction methods, comprehensive teacher observations are notably lacking, particularly in evolving regions like Africa. Observing various learner social behaviors, Bloom's Taxonomy levels, and personality traits provides valuable insights. Empowering teachers with efficient tools to add insights based on human observations could be transformative for supporting holistic learner development. Bridging the gap between data-driven assessments and teacher observations holds significant potential. When integrated into platforms like Khan Academy, this approach can deepen the understanding of learners' challenges and abilities, creating a more supportive educational environment.
