AI tools are quickly becoming unavoidable in education settings. I recently asked a high school student about it and she said "Everyone uses AI" despite the district policy against it. That disconnect is glaring. As a former school district attorney, I know that getting a nuanced policy right can be tough, but its certainly worth the investment. Rather than outright bans that will lead to underground usage, we need pragmatic policies acknowledging this new reality. A couple of key points I think deserve more discussion: 🥇 First, rather than a blanket ban, we're better off ensuring we incorporate AI responsibly into curricula and lesson plans. We should be teaching into it instead of shoving it away, which is futile and could leave students unprepared. 🥈 Second, we should work to ensure that AI enhances educational equity rather than diminishing it. There's a valid concern about AI enabling an overly simplistic "differentiation" approach that waters down or overscaffolds content. AI can be transformative for diverse learners (and their teachers) by personalizing instruction and adapting to individual needs. However, we must support educators in building skills to leverage AI to facilitate intellectual preparation - promoting lessons that prompt productive struggle and engage higher-order skills. This capability has to be paired with creating psychologically safe classroom environments. Combining AI's personalization strengths with teacher-guided development of rigorous critical thinking is essential for equitable learning. I don't have all the answers, but I am convinced that burying our heads in the sand or issuing blanket bans is the wrong approach. I've seen it happen with other exciting technology and it does not have to be the case. We need open dialogue, professional development, and guidelines around ethical AI use. What are your thoughts? It's a complex issue with no easy answers, but open discussion is crucial for getting it right and positioning all students for long-term success. #AI #EdTech #ResponsibleAI #EquitableAI #PersonalizedLearning #theabilitychalllenge #inclusionmatters https://lnkd.in/es-pZhtq

An insightful read from our Australian counterparts on AI in education. My thoughts to-date: 👍🏼we are all on a learning curve 👍🏼we can’t know everything all the time 👍🏼taking steps to learn, trial, assess, and evaluate is crucial 👍🏼it’s not going away 👍🏼myths abound - some of these are assumptive and fear-based, and are being debunked 👍🏼many kids are already all over AI in some form or another 👍🏼keep the ‘human and humane’ at the centre 👍🏼there’s new ways of learning, and deeper learning can be fostered in the use of AI and GenAI. for all of us, and our young people 👍🏼don’t hang back 👍🏼where there’s anything happening connected to the internet, there’s always going to be risk, challenges, and harmful/illegal use of the same space. Educate, educate, educate. #AI #education #knowledge #humanity #safetybydesign #wellbeing

Today's snippet from the "Beyond the Hype" benchmarking report we are publishing here: https://lnkd.in/ejay9FMn Today, let's talk about confidence in AI Tools Our data reveals the AI tools that are making the biggest impact in schools and colleges in England - which tools are gaining traction and why? Unsurprisingly, general-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini are leading the pack. These versatile tools are being employed for a range of tasks, from routine administration to content generation. Their accessibility and broad applicability make them a popular choice for educators dipping their toes into AI. However, as I cautioned in Issue 8 of The Skinny, we must be wary of the hype surrounding these tools. While they offer exciting possibilities, they also come with limitations and potential risks that need to be carefully managed. When it comes to more specialised educational needs, tools like MagicSchool and Teachmate are gaining popularity. These platforms are designed specifically for classroom use, offering functionalities that align closely with daily teaching practices. Their success underscores the value of purpose-built educational AI tools. However, the prevalence of these tools also raises important considerations: - Digital literacy: How can we ensure that both teachers and students are equipped to use these tools effectively and critically? - Equity of access: Are all schools able to access and benefit from these tools equally? - Pedagogical integration: How do we best incorporate these tools into existing teaching methodologies? - Ethical use: What guidelines need to be in place to ensure responsible use of AI in education? As we continue to explore the potential of AI in education, it's vital that we approach tool selection and implementation thoughtfully. We need to consider not just the capabilities of these tools, but how they align with our educational goals and values. What's your experience with AI tools in education? Have you found certain tools particularly effective? How are you addressing the challenges of implementation? #AITools #EdTech #DigitalLiteracy #AIinEducation #SkinnyonAIED #AI #EdTech #Edchat #Leaders #innovation #technology #Learning #Students #Teaching #Edreform For more thoughts like this read the skinny here https://lnkd.in/gTaNTRkb

✋ As Term 1 here in TAS the AI conversation continues. As a Department for Education, Children and Young People Teacher utilizing the depths of what AI has to offer. (+Building AI Solutions). Through the holiday break, I'd be more than willing to talk, share and answer any questions from teachers, school leaders and administrators about AI Education. Why? If we don't work to understand the dead set technology revolution happening around us within our schools, our State will be left behind. Daily, I see mainland posts of Department webinars, workshops and professional learning sessions for school leaders and teachers and could infer the gap for us is widening.
Embracing AI in education is not just about keeping up with technology—it's about enhancing the learning journey. The Educator's article echoes our stance at Teachers Assistant AI, where we see AI as a catalyst for personalized learning and a tool for teacher empowerment. "While the leap from GPT-3.5 to GPT-4 was dizzying, the potential of GPT-5 could mark a seismic shift in this technology and its capabilities." Our platform is meticulously crafted to support Australian educators and built in recognition that OpenAI isn't the only cool kid in town. We're positioned and progressive supporting access to the most capable AI models available including but not limited to Anthropic's Claude 3, Gemini, Groq and Perplexity all in one location. Teachers and Schools will benefit from choice, training and support. That's where we aim to excel. Love the read Brett Henebery! https://lnkd.in/gDv6VbkW
