On 26 November, the Network convened its final meeting for the year. Conversation focused on our latest publication, Securing Digital Equity in Australian Education, and priority actions to achieve equity in digital education. Participants ranked 10 potentially impactful actions, with the following emerging as the top three: 🔹Develop standards and quality assurance mechanisms for edtech 🔹Enhance professional learning through new or identified existing high quality offerings 🔹Develop a benchmark for educational digital access levels. We also heard from an expert panel featuring Deb Summerhayes (NSW Department of Education), Eldon Lim (Brotherhood of St Laurence), and Travis Smith (Microsoft), who discussed the greatest opportunities and risks to progress, as well as the broader policy landscape. 🚀 Today, we launch our latest report, “Tech skills for the next generation’, produced in partnership with the ACS (Australian Computer Society). 🎓 Teachers are passionate about #digitalttechnologies but find it difficult to keep kids engaged with it in the classroom. Based on a national #survey of Australia’s #teachers conducted by ACS, two thirds of teachers reported that they were struggling to teach the Digital Technologies Curriculum, where one quarter did not have enough support. 📉 On our current trajectory, Australia will struggle to meet its growing need for digital and technology #skills and prepare all Australians for the digital world. Without action to help teachers, Australia could fail to prepare the next generation with the skills they will need not only for future careers, but to thrive in a digitally-driven world. 📜 The report recommends actions in 4 key areas for Australian governments and the education sector to take right now to ensure our next generation is set up for success: 1. Ensuring there are accessible ready-to-use teaching resources 2. Embedding digital readiness into Initial teacher education for new teachers 3. Supporting access to ongoing professional development and training 4. Elevating the awareness of value and importance of digital skills among parents and the community 🌟 Tech will continue to evolve so Australians need the creative and critical thinking skills to evaluate a changing technology landscape. With action in these areas, Australia has the opportunity to empower young Australians with the skills and knowledge they need to become tech savvy citizens and professionals.
